The First Annual Mid-Hudson Walk for Celiac Disease
I am really excited to participate in the 1st Mid-Hudson Walk for Celiac Disease on May 19th. This part of the Hudson Valley holds a special place in my heart since I am a Marist College alumni and I spent four wonderful years in this area. Details about my participation are still being decided by the planning committee but it looks like I might be at a table for gluten-free bloggers. I will keep you posted. If you are in the area on May 19, please come to this fundraiser and say hello!

More than 2 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease, a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients in food.  People who have Celiac Disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley.
All proceeds from the Walk for Celiac Disease will benefit the Celiac Disease Foundation, Hudson Valley Chapter and the ongoing research programs of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.  This Walk will help educate the greater Mid-Hudson Valley Community about this disease and will, hopefully, make those with Celiac more aware of the education, support and other resources available to them in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Through diagnosis and dietary education, the Digestive Disease Center of the Hudson Valley dedicates itself to helping people with Celiac feel better and to improving their digestive health and quality of life.
To this end, the Digestive Disease Center has created the Digestive Disease Center Community Fund in an effort to diagnose individuals, to educate patients and clinicians, to advocate for patients and to promote gastrointestinal health in the Mid-Hudson Valley Community.

Send a Gluten-Free Kid to Camp!
I am really excited about this fundraiser to send kids to gluten-free camp for one week. Next July, the Celiac Disease Foundation is hosting their very first week-long gluten-free summer camp. In the holiday spirit of giving, Gluten-Free Saver has partnered with Van’s Natural Foods to help raise money for scholarships for children to attend the gluten-free summer camp next July!

This week only when you donate just $2 (or more if you choose), Van’s Foods will match all donations until they reach $1,000. Help support the cause and reach the goal of $2,000 total at www.glutenfreesaver.com.

Sure, receiving gifts this time of year is always fun, but the feeling of knowing that your generous donation of just $2 can bring a tremendous amount of joy to a young child… well, now that’s priceless. 100% of all donations will go directly to CDF. If you’re feeling extra generous this holiday season, you aren’t limited to donating just $2 – you can give as much money as your heart desires!

As a camp enthusiast, I think this fundraiser is fantastic. Please consider donating this holiday season to send a kid to gluten-free camp!

Gluten-Free Camp 2012 with the Celiac Disease Foundation
If you read my blog, you will know I love camp. If you spend time with my sister and I, inevitably we will probably tell you a camp story or sing you a camp song. We are those girls that say "And one time, at 4-H Camp..." without the gross band-camp stores. ;-)

I went to day camp for many years and then went to DPF Nassau County 4-H Sleepaway Camp for 7 years.  All of my camp years were as a kid living with Celiac on a gluten-free diet. Camp memories are wonderful memories that I will never forget. I still keep in touch with some camp friends thanks to Facebook and I plan on sending my own children to camp one day. It truly was a great experience.

Unfortunately for parents of Celiac children they are often too nervous to send their child away to camp for fear of being glutened when away from home. I completely understand this feeling. I had my own milk crate of gluten-free food in the walk-in fridge at camp and developed a great relationship with my camp cook, giving her a big tip at the end of every summer. Even with my own food crate, there was still always a risk of getting sick when being fed mass-produced food. My camp cook never heard of being gluten-free but she was willing to hold my food and help me out with special meals when needed. I will never forget the first time she handed me a plate of gluten-free French toast made with my bread on a Sunday morning. It meant the world to me! I ate a lot of salads during the summer, but I also safely enjoyed countless meals while drinking bug juice. (if you went to camp, you know what I mean!)

Luckily, things have changed in the past 15 years and now more and more camps are offering gluten-free weeks. I think this is a wonderful idea and I encourage parents to sign their kids up for these camps. It will help put your mind at ease knowing that the facility, the counselors, and the organizers understand Celiac Disease and the necessity of serving gluten-free food to your children.

I am excited to announce that the Celiac Disease Foundation is having their very first Children's Celiac Camp in July30 - August 3, 2012 for kids ages 7 to 15. This week-long session promises fun activities, amazing outdoor activities in the San Bernardino Mountains, and most importantly gluten-free food all week long. If you live in California or nearby, I really do encourage you to sign your kids up for this gluten-free camp week. Trust me, it will be a memorable experience for your child!

Lifetime Television Features Celiac Disease Foundation
Tune in to "The Balancing Act" on Lifetime TV
October 25th at 7:00 am (ET/PT)
6:00 am (CT/MT) on Lifetime Television

Hear Phyllis Kessler, President, Celiac Disease Foundation South Florida Chapter, talk about the efforts the foundation is making to raise awareness of Celiac and provide resources to those who currently suffer from the disease.

"Celiac Disease Foundation has been raising awareness of this vastly under diagnosed disease for over 20 years. Celiac is one of the most common genetic disorders in the world, yet most people don't even know what it is. The Balancing Act is a great opportunity to educate viewers about this disease and make them aware of the resources and guidance that CDF provides."

Over the years, CDF has built a community of patients, families, and healthcare professionals whose combined efforts have helped improve the quality of life for people with Celiac Disease. They have also tirelessly promoted early detection of the disease, which can drastically lower the chances of more severe consequences like osteoporosis, anemia and infertility.

"Having Phyllis Kessler from the Celiac Disease Foundation on 'The Balancing Act' has brought yet another great solution to women, one that will have a real impact, and help them balance their lives. This is the essence of solutions-based programming, and we are proud that we could bring this information to our viewers" says Doug Campbell, Founder and Executive VP of Programming for The Balancing Act.

Mary’s Gone Crackers Supports Celiac Awareness Month

Mary’s Gone Crackers and the Celiac Disease Foundation Suggest Ways to Raise Awareness for Celiac Awareness Month

Gourmet Gluten-Free Snack Company and Non-Profit Support Organization Encourage Understanding of Celiac Disease with 10 Tips to Spread Awareness

Gridley, Calif. (May 3, 2010) – In honor of National Celiac Disease Awareness Month in May, Mary’s Gone Crackers, makers of gourmet gluten-free foods, and the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) have released a list of 10 ways to help promote awareness of the disease. Celiac Disease affects approximately one in 133 people; nearly three million Americans nationwide.

Celiac Disease is one of the most common genetic conditions in the world, but often goes undiagnosed because it is a multi-symptom, multi-system disorder. It is estimated that 97 percent of Americans with the disease often go undiagnosed.

10 ways you can help raise awareness include:

  1. Support National Celiac Disease Awareness Month by spreading the word! Send out an email, or post it on Facebook or Twitter.
  2. Prepare your favorite gluten-free dish for your next gathering, then print copies of your recipe and place it by your dish to share!
  3. Write your congressperson and ask them to co-sponsor/support H. Con. Res 110 designating May as Celiac Disease Awareness Month.
  4. Give the gift of health – Next time you give a gift, consider a basket filled with your favorite gluten-free products. Include Mary’s Gone Crackers and let people know that you don’t have to be gluten intolerant to enjoy the healthy, wholesome taste!
  5. Contact the health editors of your local newspaper and ask them if they know about Celiac Disease. Write them a letter and share your story.
  6. Share current books – Celiac Disease for Dummies, by Sheila Crowe, MD and Ian Blumer, MD; Revised and Updated: Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic by Peter H.R. Green, MD; or Healthier Without Wheat by Stephen Wangen, MD. Read them and pass them on to people who you think may benefit from learning more about Celiac Disease or how gluten may be the cause of their illness.
  7. Find out if there is a health fair or vendor fair coming to your town and offer to set up a table with information on Celiac Disease and how to get tested. Contact the Celiac Disease Foundation for the free awareness brochures, “Are You The One?” which covers symptoms, testing, tips and more!
  8. Check to see if there are any local benefits or marathons that support Celiac Disease – join or volunteer! Check out Team Gluten-free™ and help raise awareness and funds through participation in local and regional races.
  9. When you visit a friend or neighbor in the hospital, or have a regular physical or dental exam, take the opportunity to talk to doctors, dentists, nurses, healthcare workers, and dieticians to help increase their awareness of Celiac Disease and the gluten-free diet needs of Celiac patients.
  10. Word-of-mouth. The best way to raise awareness is to just tell somebody about Celiac Disease. Share your story!

“We’re excited to collaborate with Mary’s Gone Crackers to help promote dialogue and raise awareness for Celiac Disease,” said Elaine Monarch, founder/executive director of the Celiac Disease Foundation. “With so many people still going undiagnosed, we hope these tips will motivate people to share their experiences and knowledge of Celiac Disease, helping others to learn more about it and increase the rate of diagnosis.”

Common symptoms of recurring bloating, gas, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, constipation, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, bone or joint pain, migraine headaches and unexplained anemia are often and unknowingly caused by Celiac Disease. Since many people living with Celiac Disease go undiagnosed, it is important for anyone displaying one or more of these symptoms to consult a doctor for testing. Symptoms vary and are not always gastrointestinal.

“Celiac Awareness Month is an ideal time to spread the word of this widespread condition and we’re dedicated to encouraging discussion among people living with or without Celiac Disease,” said Mary Waldner, co-founder of Mary’s Gone Crackers. “Ever since my son and I were diagnosed with Celiac Disease, we eliminated gluten from our diets and reclaimed our health, which encouraged me to create a line of gluten-free snacks so others can do the same!"

Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Dessert Mixes

As you may have read in the gluten-free news and blog world, Betty Crocker is coming out with gluten-free dessert mixes in June. Oh wait, it's June now!!! Although I haven't seen the mixes yet, you can look online to see if the gluten-free mixes are at a store near you. Unfortunately, they are not availability within a 50 mile radius of my apartment or my sister's house in CT. I guess I will have to wait a little bit longer.

I contacted Betty Crocker to see when the mixes might be available and here was their response:

Dear Miss Smith:

Thank you for contacting General Mills regarding the availability of Betty Crocker gluten free mixes. These mixes were released to the market at the beginning of June so it may take a couple weeks for them to appear in grocery stores and on the product locator. However, you could ask a manager at your store if they have ordered or plan on ordering these products.

We would like to see all our products on shelves in every store. However, as the number of items on the market increases, grocers face the dilemma of finding sufficient shelf space to display products. Retailers stock the products and brand choices they feel best meet the majority of their customers′ needs.

We do offer an online product locator, which you may find helpful in finding this product in your area. Please visit our corporate web site at www.generalmills.com and select “Brands”, then “Product Locator” on the left side of the screen to utilize this feature. Or if you prefer, you can call us at 1-800-249-0562, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Central Standard Time. One of our Consumer Services Representatives will be happy to initiate the product search for you.

We also offer a ′Hard to Find Products′ web site, http://generalmills.elsstore.com/ which may contain the item(s) you are looking for. Additionally, while we don′t have any involvement with the fulfillment of groceries through Amazon.com, they do have some of our products available for direct purchase and shipment (including APO′s).

We appreciate your loyalty to our products. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Betty Crocker, owned by General Mills maker of the gluten-free Chex line of cereal, is a proud supporter of the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) and Celiac Sprue Association (CSA).

Celiac Disease Foundation on Hasselbeck's Book
Although I got this information a little late in terms of being able to call into Larry King, I feel that it is an interesting take on Elisabeth Hasselbeck's new book "The G-Free Diet".

Celiac Colleagues:

I am writing to call your attention to the current publicity surrounding the new book, The G-free Diet, A Gluten-Free Survival Guide by Elisabeth Hassselbeck, co-host of The View. While it is important to call attention to celiac disease, the information must be accurate – the inaccuracies in this book are potentially dangerous and detrimental to celiacs and to those yet to be diagnosed if people self diagnose and start eating GF. Our mission is to assist in getting people accurately diagnosed and the message in this book could defeat this mission. It appears that this book is being marketed as a fitness diet – eat g-free and feel so much better. Celiac is incorrectly referred to as an allergy not an autoimmune disease.

The GF diet is the medically mediated prescription that controls the condition for a diagnosed celiac. Several items in the book are misleading and inaccurate and place further limitations on the GF diet. The gluten-free lifestyle is a lifelong commitment for the diagnosed celiac, not an option, not a fad diet – adhering to the GF lifestyle requires patience and persistence. This lifestyle can not be trivialized.

Elisabeth will be interviewed on Larry King Live this evening on CNN. PLEASE take the time to call in to the show or send an email to Larry King Live to help correct some of this misinformation.

Email Larry King Live at: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form5.lkl.html
The phone number for call-ins to the show is 1-800-676-2100.

Thank you.

Ener-G Foods to Support Victims of the S. California Wildfires
I just got back from a very interesting vacation in San Diego. My second day in So Cal there were over 5 wildfires burning in San Diego County. By my third day, more than 50% of my hotel was filled with fire evacuees. It was quite a scary time to be there, but I worked hard for my vacation and I decided to stay. I had to cancel my trip to Palm Springs since every way out of San Diego county that I had planned for was blocked by fires. I wanted to avoid driving through any potential unsafe zones, so I extended my time in San Diego. Let me tell you, it isn't a bad place to be "trapped" but I just wish it had been under different circumstances. People were enormously generous to the over 500,000 evacuees but I couldn't help but wonder what people with Celiac Disease were to do when most of the food donated was stuff we couldn't eat. David, of Gluten-Free NYC, posted about gluten-free food for evacuees and I think it is important to get the word out.

Today while I was searching the internet, I also found out that Ener-G Foods is coordinating food donations with the Celiac Disease Foundation and the American Red Cross to help those on restricted diets. People affected by the wildfires can contact the Celiac Disease Foundation for more information on how to obtain these donated foods:

Please consider donations specifically for the California Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund. From being there, I know first hand the devastation these people are going through. My heart and prayers go out to Southern California.
