Gluten-Free Holiday Tips and Delight GF Giveaway Winner
Last week I hosted a giveaway for a free digital copy of the Delight Gluten-Free Magazine holiday issue. I am excited to announce that Shannon from Gluten-Free Living in DC is the winner. Congratulations Shannon and thanks for your holiday tip!

Here are some of the great tips I got from the contest entries:

"Know what you are eating! If you are attending an office potluck, ask the cooks how they made their meal - or stick with what you KNOW you can eat - salads, popcorn, etc. If you are attending a holiday party - ask the host/hostess in advance what they are planning on making, and see if you could bring something that you know you can eat! For me, this has been a helpful tip!"
~Shannon from Gluten-Free Living in DC

"I was diagnosed in March 2011, so for me, this is my first family get-together Christmas. My oldest son and I have Celiac. We'll take our own gluten-free rolls, hubby is making the fresh ham and I'll make the gravy. My youngest son, a gluten-eater, is attending school for Bakery & Pastry Arts. He has a gluten-free apple pie recipe - that will be dessert!"
~Helen

For all those out there with a big gluten eating family here's my tip for you: share the love! Being the only diagnosed celiac in my family, I like to use the big family functions to share all of my homemade gf goodies and explain the importance and seriousness of food allergies. If it's possible, I like to cook and bake with them and show them how easy it is to prepare food gluten free. Knowledge is power people and what better place to start then with our families!
~Emily from @blueyemily

My tip for the holidays... eat before and bring your own snacks to any holiday events. That way you can enjoy the company without worrying! When we eat with family we know we are safe and I always bake the desserts. Like the other person commented about the crushed cookies pie crust.. it works great! I made a pumpkin cheesecake pie with gingersnap crust and it was better than any gluten pie!! I also use the cookie crust to make ice cream pies... YUM!
~Kim

My tip is simple , yet essential for me! One I found a yummy gluten free bakery, my life was SOuch easier and now I can enjoy my fave toast and jam with berries! (My all time fave real fast when we travel back home to Canada for the Holidays!!)
~Kennell

Make great pie crusts with crushed gluten free cookies.
I made a great pumpkin pie crust using crushed Glow Gluten Free Ginger Snaps. It was MUCH better than the traditional pie crust; spicy and perfect to go with pumpkin. Just pulse the cookies in a food processor (or crush by hand), then mix with 4 tablespoons of melted butter (or butter substitute), and press into pie plate. Bake crust alone, about 7 minutes at 350, before filling with pumpkin. My next attempt will be using the gingersnaps for an apple custard pie crust.
~Gotham Tomato

I went gluten free just before Christmas last year so it was all very new and emotional. This year I feel a little better-prepared but am not sure I have a tip to share. We are hosting Christmas dinner and I am thinking of doing a Mexican-themed dinner since I can make enchiladas and side dishes which are naturally gluten-free.

Back to School with Rudi's Gluten Free and Giveaway
I chose two winners using Random.org. Thanks for entering!

As you all know, I have been a huge fan of Rudi's Gluten-Free Bakery since the first day I met them back in October 2010. Their breads are amazing and so are the staff behind the gluten-free products. Since 2010, Rudi's has launched pizza crusts, rolls, and buns. With their expanding, gluten-free baked goods line I am excited to see what's next for Rudi's Gluten Free Bakery.

Rudi's knows gluten-free school lunches can be a challenge. Their gluten-free breads are loaded with goodness; they are a tasty and easy solution to the lunchtime dilemma. And, unlike many gluten-free breads on the market today, Rudi’s GF breads contain no modified starches or gums, no artificial preservatives, and no artificial chemicals. Send your kids off to school and feel GOOD about what they are eating.

Rudi's Gluten Free knows school lunch planning is hard, but planning a FUN and HEALTHY meal EVERYDAY can be an even bigger challenge! To help you out, check out this easy lunch planning calendar and yummy, kid approved recipes to help get the school year started.

Delight Gluten-Free Magazine Goes Digital
I am really excited to announce that Delight Gluten Free Magazine is hosting a gluten-free potluck for the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group on July 24th. This meetup event filled up in less than 5 hours and we have an ever-growing waiting list, so it's clearly a popular event. I had been waiting on posting this press release until Apple put the apps up, but they seem to be really slow with adding any apps. (My friend built a wine map app and it took months for it to go live.) I will be sure to update you, dear readers, as soon as the app is ready. Read on for more information about how Delight Gluten Free Magazine is going digital!

Big Changes at Delight Gluten-Free Magazine
I was excited to run into Jordan Gary and Stacy Maltin when I was at Food Fete back in March. They gave me some exciting news about Delight Gluten-Free Magazine. Read on to learn more.

Delight Gluten-Free Magazine Announces new publisher, Executive Editor, and Expanded distribution plan

NEW YORK, MARCH 30, 2011—Delight Gluten-Free Magazine is pleased to announce its purchase by SideWalk Media, a move that will help the dynamic magazine expand its reach into new mainstream markets.

Jordan Gary—the magazine’s new Publisher—plans to significantly expand distribution over the next year into more mainstream retailers, as well as enhance the presence of the magazine nationally and internationally. With the new ownership, the magazine has also refined its entire concept to target the global gluten-free community including people living with Celiac Disease, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis and Autism, as well as all-around foodies.

With the purchase, Vanessa Maltin Weisbrod has been promoted to Executive Editor of the magazine. Vanessa has been with the magazine since its beginning in 2008 and has been a driving force behind its success. She has a longstanding background in the journalism, culinary and gluten-free worlds, has published two gluten-free cookbooks and is a leading authority in the Celiac Disease community. In her new role, Vanessa will oversee all things editorial in the magazine, as well as shape the vision for it moving forward.

Julie Luse—the former publisher of the magazine—has decided to take a small step back to spend more time with her blossoming family, however she will continue on at the magazine as the Founding Editor and as Creative Director where she will be responsible for maintaining the beautiful look and feel of Delight Gluten-Free Magazine.

Additionally, Tiffany Janes has been promoted to Director of Advertising & Community Outreach. Tiffany has been a contributor to the magazine for the last two years and is a household name in the gluten-free community. She writes for several gluten-free blogs and has led the charge in Atlanta for getting restaurants to adopt gluten-free menus.

Future issues of the magazine will include:

  • Interviews with celebrities maintaining a gluten-free diet. The Spring 2011 issue features an up close and personal interview with Tenley Molzhan, best known as America’s Sweetheart who appeared on ABC’s The Bachelor.
  • Dozens of fully illustrated recipes that have all been tested and approved in-house by magazine test kitchen staff.
  • Enlightening articles that will help readers maintain a special diet.
  • A gluten-free lifestyle guide that includes safe and unsafe foods, as well as tips for understanding food additives and reading labels. Expanded recipes and substitutions for gluten-free, dairy (casein-free), nut- free, egg-free, soy-free, rice-free, corn-free and many vegetarian options.
  • Comprehensive travel articles that will help readers plan gluten-free, allergen-free trips around the world.
  • And, much, much more!
