Crumbs Gluten-Free Now Open in New York City

Today is the day! The popular cupcake shop Crumbs is finally opening their very first 100% gluten-free bakery right here in New York City. All of these products will be produced in a gluten-free and peanut-free bakery and delivered fresh on a daily basis to the store. This will be New York City's 6th 100% gluten-free bakery and probably one of the most popular.

According to a press release from Crumbs in September: "By adding gluten-free alternatives to our already distinctive assortment of gourmet cupcakes and desserts, we are truly opening our doors to a whole new group of consumers who may not have had the chance to taste our desserts before," says Julian R. Geiger, President and Chief Executive Officer of Crumbs Bake Shop, Inc. "Now, those who live a gluten-free lifestyle will be able to enjoy the Crumbs experience."

Located just south of Union Square in the heart of NYU land, Crumbs is in a prime location. You can reach Crumbs Gluten-Free via public transportation on the A/B/C/D/E/F/M trains to West 4th Street or the N/R trains to 8th Street. There is even a New Jersey PATH train stop right near by.

Check out their impressive gluten-free menu!

Gluten-Free Date Night in NYC
I met my friend Kristen, of the world-famous Wine With Kristen, through the NYC Celiac Meetup group many years ago. We crossed that casual support group friendship line ages ago and now we meet on a regular basis for dinner, treats, gossip, and of course, wine. There is something so comforting about meeting up with a fellow Celiac for a meal. You don't have to worry about being the annoying friend that needs to eat gluten-free while no one else does. You can both pick a safe gluten-free friendly place and just go eat. The other day, Kristen and I did just that to catch up and eat. We decided to meet at the new Pip's Place Gluten-Free Cakery on 39th Street and Lexington Ave. in New York City You know you have a really awesome friend who agrees to meet you for gluten-free dessert BEFORE dinner. After we each had dessert as an appetizer, we walked over to S'Mac on 33rd Street and 3rd Ave. for gluten-free macaroni and cheese and a Bard's beer. It was great to catch up with Kristen and safely eat gluten-free and delicious food. Here are pictures from our gluten-free dinner date night in New York City.

Gluten-Free Help Wanted in NYC
I was sent this intriguing email the other day from a television producer. I asked a lot of questions but was asked to post this email as is. While this is far from blind item, because it isn't everyday that a celebrity opens a gluten-free bakery in NYC, but the words "reality tv", "gluten-free", and "new show" immediately jumped into my brain. I do not have any more details than this and really I am just guessing what is coming, so please contact producer Sarah if you have any questions or if you are interested in employment at the new not-so-top secret gluten-free bakery

Hi,
I am a TV producer who is currently working on a pilot with a well known celebrity who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Since this life changing event she has decided to open a gluten free bakery in NYC. She is currently looking for employees. Skills can vary but most important is that they share her passion for changing the way celiac's think about food and wanting gluten free food to become accessible and healthy. If you are interested in employment please send an e-mail to thebakingqueen2013@gmail.com
Please note that you may be asked to be on camera.
Thanks!!
Sarah

After putting together this post, I also found this post on Craigslist. Yep, my reality tv suspicions are pretty much confirmed.  Let's place bets on which channel this will be on. Cooking Channel makes most sense, but I wonder if this if a gluten-free bakery is "quirky" enough to be on TLC?! ha!

Mr. Ritt's Isn't Getting Out The Gluten Free Business Completely
Mr Ritt's Bakery isn't getting out of the gluten free business at this time. What they will be doing is making a full mix line which will include all of the breads, including the healthier ones like quinoa and buckwheat, as well as their flour and waffle mixes. Ritt has also been reworking all of the recipes as he creates the breads into mixes to improve taste and texture, since he now has more time to work with them. The versatility in a home kitchen with the mixes versus them having to make everything will really make this work well for people as well as cutting costs. They are currently working on getting them developed and into distribution so they can be available at retail level rather than having to direct ship. Mr Ritt's last day of retail operations was July 31st.

Mr. Ritt's will have available the following mixes, which are being developed for multiple purposes:

  • 3 different cup for cup flour blends
  • L&W bread
  • Challah Bread/cinnamon breads/sticky buns
  • Multi purpose Italian bread (this is the current test, and it makes a soft bread with a solid crust as well as a Pizza crust and Foccacia. The customer reviews on the samples have been more than positive) Mr. Ritt's is also try to make this work for a pepperoni or sausage bread.
  • Buckwheat bread
  • Quinoa bread and soft pretzel mix
  • Artisan Bread that will make Olive bread, Tomato Basil, Pesto, or cheddar breads.
  • Buckernickel (mock pumpernickel) - already developed
  • Mock rye bread mix - to make mock rye, mock onion rye, mock caraway rey, and mock caraway onion rye breads

On another note, Mr. Ritt's is moving back to the midwest, and hoping to expand these lines out there and keep the biscotti going.

Own a Gluten-Free Bakery
I got an interesting email today. Have you ever dreamed of owning a gluten-free bakery? Do you live in or near California? Here are the details...

Fabulous location (a jewel - approx 1000 sq. ft.; designed by A&E, no less!) near trendy downtown Culver City in West Los Angeles, 1/2 mile from the 405. Nice neighbors, helpful vendors, INCREDIBLY WONDERFUL clientele - inspirational, in fact! Current licenses and health-dept permits included.

Truly a TURN-KEY business, this bakery includes all necessary equipment, recipes, staff, and wholesale + retail customers to make your new enterprise profitable right away. The previous owner needs capital immediately and must sell. Our loss is your gain as the gluten-free market is one the few industries still experiencing double-digit-growth in 2009.

The ideal new owner will have background in the natural-food baking profession &/or with the gluten-free marketplace. Asking price is $147,000. Owner will consider financing for qualified buyer. For more information please contact:
