Celiac College Scholarship Program
As a board member for the Kicking4Celiac Foundation, I am excited to announce our 2013 scholarship program. This is an amazing opportunity for a celiac student to get some money for college.

The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation now offers a one of a kind scholarship opportunity that will help students with Celiac Disease off-set the costs of gluten-free living when entering college. This scholarship award helps students subsidize their meal costs that are dictated by living with Celiac Disease.

We are pleased to award these scholarships to students that are graduating high school and entering into a four-year undergraduate college program, and are doing so with Celiac Disease. As the daily struggles of living with Celiac Disease can sometimes be debilitating, each of the students applying should be students who exemplify perseverance, hard work, and dedication, all traits the foundation prides itself on.

Other criteria must be met during the application process, but we naturally want to honor those hard at work that live with Celiac Disease, and continually open new doors for themselves through their hard work!

The Foundation is excited to award $10,000 in scholarships to the graduating High School class of 2013!

The application for the graduating High School class of 2013 is now available, so e-mail info@kicking4celiac.org to receive yours! Don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter for up to date scholarship information, as well as all of the new and exciting things the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation has to offer!

The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation also offers a scholarship program to college students affected with celiac disease. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation also works to raise funds for Celiac Disease centers through a variety of meaningful charity events and sponsorship opportunities. Promoting an active lifestyle and including physical activities in its fundraisers and events is at the core of the Foundation’s primary goal, which is to demonstrate the potential for celiac sufferers to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle while confronting the effects of celiac disease. www.kicking4celiac.org

Celiac Disease Scholarship Program - The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation offers a one of a kind national scholarship opportunity that helps students off-set the costs of gluten-free living when entering college. This one time scholarship award helps students subsidize their meal costs that are dictated by living with Celiac Disease. These scholarships are awarded to students graduating high school and entering into a four-year undergraduate college program, and are doing so with Celiac Disease. As the daily struggles of living with Celiac Disease can be debilitating, each student applying is one that exemplifies perseverance, hard work, and dedication, all traits the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation prides itself on. Other criteria must be met during the application process, but we want to reward those that live with Celiac Disease and continually open new doors for themselves through their hard work!

Cleats 4 Kids Program - The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation’s “Cleats 4 Kids” program collects sports cleats for both boys and girls and donates them to recreation centers and organizations in need, throughout the country. Currently in it’s early stages, we have partnered this program with various organizations in underserved areas of New York and Los Angeles. This program was developed to give children in underprivileged areas the opportunity to play sports without the concern of being able to afford proper footwear. The Foundation collects cleats, new and used, not torn, and packs and ships them out to these areas. The purpose of this is to keep these children active, and to help them continue to live an enjoyable, happy, and healthy lifestyle. Exercise, as well as proper nutrition and education is important, and the foundation helps to strengthen that ideal within the recipients of these donations.

Making Tracks for Celiacs on Long Island

Inaugural Making Tracks for Celiacs on Long Island, NY
Sunday June 10, 2012
5K Walk/Run & 10K Run

From my good friend and director of Kicking 4 Celiac, Craig Pinto:

The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation is extremely proud to announce its partnership with the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland for the very first “Making Tracks For Celiacs” 5k event on Long Island.

This year’s event will take place on June 10th, 2012, with registration beginning at 8am, and the race starting at 9am. The 5k will begin and end in Theodore Roosevelt Park, in Oyster Bay.

Participants can join as individuals, or join as teams, and each person will be able to follow their total amounts raised directly on the website. All participants will receive performance t-shirts the day of the event, timed running, as well as be treated to gluten free foods at the event, provided by various gluten-free food vendors. All support helps, and you may sign up as a participant, a volunteer, or a sponsor.

Celiac disease is a genetic disorder affecting children and adults. People with celiac disease are unable to eat foods that contain gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. In people with celiac disease, gluten sets off an autoimmune reaction that causes the destruction of the villi in the small intestine. They produce antibodies to attack the gluten, but the same antibodies also attack the intestine, causing damage and illness. Untreated celiac disease can be life threatening!

Finding the cause of this disease is a priority of the CFCR. Alessio Fasano, MD, is the Medical Director and a leading expert in the field. A study Dr. Fasano conducted in 2003 concluded that as many as one out 133 Americans may have the disease. In fact, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has recognized celiac disease for the first time as a serious health problem in the United States and estimates almost three million Americans are affected.

We greatly appreciate your support in our effort to increase awareness, develop effective treatments and possibly, one day, find a cure. Please spread the word, we hope to make the very first event a memorable one!

Kicking4Celiac Founder on NY Ink
For those of you with cable, set your DVRs this Thursday night at 9pm for the TLC show NY Ink. My friend and founder of the Kicking4Celiac Foundation, Craig Pinto, is one of the guys getting a tattoo in this week's episode. Craig talks to NY Ink's Chris Torres about growing up with Celiac and overcoming his diagnosis. Craig also talks about his days as an arena football player and his TWO Guinness World Records, both which he got after the diagnosis.

Tune in this Thursday on TLC at 9pm to see Celiac get some attention in the reality TV world. Listen to someone real talk about living with Celiac and not some TV celebrity spouting off wrong information.

Kicking4Celiac Guinness World Record Take 2

Do you know Craig Pinto? Well, you should!

Last October, Craig made it into Guinness Book of World Records by kicking 717 field goals in a 12-hour span all in the name of Celiac Disease. Craig was diagnosed with Celiac Disease more than 11 years ago and he never let his diagnosis stop him. A former indoor professional football player and now Guinness Book of World Records record holder, Craig is going for World Record #2 this weekend by kicking the most field goals EVER in 24 hours. In order to be awarded the world record, Craig needs to kick a minimum of 1,000 field goals in 24 hours.

Since setting his record last year, Craig has founded Kicking4Celiac, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that aims to reach out to people affected by Celiac Disease. This year's event "will be to benefit and expand the Kicking4Celiac Foundation's Scholarship program" and will award scholarships to students with Celiac Disease heading to college.

For those of you on Long Island (NY), you can come cheer Craig on this weekend. The event will be at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay on Sunday, October 9, 2011. It is easily accessible by LIRR directly to Oyster Bay. Parking is also available.

For anyone outside of the NY area, you can donate to the event and help be a part of another world record setting day for Celiac Disease. To learn more about the Kicking4Celiac and how to donate, click here.

Welcome to the Kicking4Celiac Board

I am very excited to announce that I am now on the board of the non-profit organization, Kicking4Celiac. Founded in 2011 by Craig Pinto, the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that aims to reach out to people affected by Celiac Disease. In doing so, we look to spread positivity, education, and awareness however and wherever we can. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation works tirelessly to raise funds through various charitable events, and is excited to continuously work to help improve the lives of those who are affected by this auto-immune disorder. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation also offers a scholarship program to college students affected with the Disease, to help off-set costs and expenses of requiring a gluten-free diet. This scholarship program will begin in 2012 and will be offered to well deserving, graduating high school seniors.

I was first "virtually introduced" to Craig last fall when he was kicking his way into the Guinness Book of World Records for kicking 717 field goals in 12 hours for charity. We emailed for over a month and then finally met in person at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia Gala dinner in October. Craig is quiet and modest but extremely passionate about spreading awareness and raising money for Celiac Disease.

Kicking4Celiac Board Member Sue of GlutenFreeLI, founder Craig Pinto, and Me

As time went by, Craig's foundation began to take roots and grow. He hosted more fundraisers and started doing some really awesome speaking engagements, such as The Believe Symposium on Long Island. The foundation finally became a recognized non-profit organization early this year. I am excited to be a part of this organization especially since I share Craig's passionate for educating people about Celiac Disease and encouraging people to live and thrive with Celiac. As a Guinness Book of World Records record holder, Craig has clearly not let Celiac Disease stop him from doing anything!

On September 29, 2011, Kicking4Celiac its first Golf and Tennis Tournament to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia. You can learn how to get involved by clicking here.

Thank you Craig for all you have done and continue to do for the Celiac Community.

Click here to donate today! Your donation to the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation will help help us to develop our mission, which is to raise awareness and education for Celiac Disease, as well as provide various students with scholarships. Funds raised will also continuously help us to develop events that will bring the Celiac Disease community together and provide an outlet for support. We thank you for your support and will continue to work as best we can to serve the Celiac Disease community.

The Celiac Diva Interviews Celiac Kicker
This video is about a month old, but these are two of my favorite people in the NYC gluten-free community. Both of them are making such a positive impact and difference for those of us with Celiac Disease. Please enjoy this video from Lauren-Lucille Vasser, aka The Celiac Diva, and Craig Pinto, Guinness Book of Records World Record holder and founder of Kicking 4 Celiac.

Thanks Craig and Lauren-Lucille for all you do. Keep up the great work!

Renegade Kitchen's Kicking for Celiac Video
I met Dan Kohler of Renegade Kitchen at the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup Potluck picnic with Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef a few weeks ago. This past Thursday, I met Craig Pinto of Kicking4Celiac at the Celiac Disease Center's fundraiser gala. Put the two of this dynamic guys together and you get one kick-ass video (pun totally intended!)

On October 10, 2010, Craig Pinto set a Guinness Book of World Records new world record for kicking 717 field goals in 12 hours. Craig, the field kicker for the New Jersey Revolution arena football team, had the goal to not only set this World record but to also raise awareness for Celiac Disease. Through his website, a pre-kick party, and his big day, Craig raised over $5000 for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. Congratulations to Craig, our very own Celiac World Record holder!
