Another Reason to Love BabyCakes NYC
As you know, BabyCakes NYC is one of the most popular (if only) bakery with gluten-free goodies in NYC. I have blogged about BabyCakes many times, usually around my birthday when I am indulging in their cupcakes. Today I have some good news to share with everyone thanks to BabyCakes. My friend Rachel got engaged last week and BabyCakes helped make her proposal special... and gluten-free! BabyCakes now has gluten-free donuts and they Rachel's boyfriend surprised her with more than donuts. Here's their blog posting:

Sigh....
By Erin McKenna on September 11, 2009 12:40 PM

If you've been to the bakery on the weekend, you've seen how packed out it gets in here. We're so busy that every limb is in use (one hand to frost, one to mix batter, a foot to clean the floor, the other foot scratching records). Needless to say, we aren't able to take orders or set anything aside for anyone--not even Madonna.

A couple weeks ago, however, one of the counter girls took a call from a panicked boyfriend. He wanted to make his girlfriend's birthday extra special with some fresh donuts to follow dinner. Girlfriend was a celiac who had never tasted a donut in her life and he wanted to give her an experience she would never forget. I think that day we were all pissed at our boyfriends or something because we all got teary about it and I quickly waved our normal policy and had the girls pack a perfect box of donuts for him to pick up.

A couple days ago, we received this very exciting email:

Hi,

I have to say a million thank-yous to the chefs/bakers who created the
Gluten-Free doughnuts, as it made my evening on Saturday, August 29th
so very special. I had heard about the doughnuts and my boyfriend had
specially pre-ordered some for me on this Saturday to make sure I
would be able to eat them for dessert. As I sat outside, drinking
coffee and devouring the chocolate glazed, and then the raspberry
filled powered doughnut, my boyfriend surprised me once more, got down
on one knee, and proposed!!

I was so completely happy and thrilled your bakery became a key
element in our engagement.

We have promised to come back each year on the anniversary of this
engagement (which also happens to be close to my birthday) to eat GF
doughnuts and remember what an amazing proposal this became.

Thank you so much for being a part of my GF life in NYC.

I'll be forever grateful.

Best,
Rachel Friedman

We are so excited for you guys!! Congratulations! Oh, and I totally expect the first child to be called BabyCakes, ok?

CONGRATULATIONS RACHEL AND CHRIS!!!

Gluten-Free Cupcakes to Go in NYC
Cupcakes are all the rage in NYC, but there are limited gluten-free options. Babycakes is one of the better known gluten-free cupcake bakeries and my birthday favorite. A few months ago a cupcake truck started appearing on the streets of NYC. The lines for the Cupcake Stop truck showed that cupcakes are extremely popular and in high demand. My coworker, a former baker, said it was too bad that I couldn’t jump on the cupcake bandwagon like everyone else since the truck didn’t sell gluten-free cupcakes. I agreed that this was disappointing.

Last week, I heard a rumor that there were gluten-free cupcakes now available but today it was confirmed. Every Tuesday the Cupcake Stop will sell gluten-free cupcakes made by Everybody Eats, a 100% gluten-free facility in Brooklyn. This is awesome news for the gluten-free community in New York City. It may be trendy, but again this is a trend I welcome. It will be nice to be able to stop by and get cupcakes to go that are safe for me to eat.

Here is the email I got today from Everybody Eats.

Cupcake Stop

Did you know there is a cupcake craze sweeping the country? Here in New York City there are lines every day and at almost every hour in front of several bakeries who specialize in them.

CupCakeStop.com is a company which puts a truck selling cupcakes in the busiest business neighborhoods of Manhattan. Flocks of office workers stop for a cupcake treat on the way back from their lunch hours.

Everybody Eats is proud to announce that on Tuesdays only for now, CupCakeStop.com will be selling Everybody Eats' gluten free cupcakes from their truck. We're starting with very standard yellow cake topped with vanilla and chocolate frosting, and we're hoping to move into more exotic "designer cupcakes" such as chocolate mocha, piña colada (pineapple-coconut), and creamsicle (orange and vanilla).

If you live in NYC, you can access www.cupcakestop.com and find which cupcakes are being offered that day and where the truck will be.

You can also follow Cupcake Stop on Twitter to find out their daily location: http://twitter.com/CupcakeStop

Gluten-Free Birthday Traditions

I grew up being the only kid in school not bringing in Munchkins, but bringing in dixie cups of vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Of course the other kids LOVED this, but I wanted to be like everyone else.

Cupcakes seem like another birthday norm so starting a few years back, I decided that I needed gluten-free cupcakes on every birthday. Lucky me that for the past two years, I have had great friends and coworkers head to BabyCakes NYC to buy me gluten-free cupcakes. My coworkers devoured the gluten-free cupcakes yesterday, not even noticing the difference from regular cupcakes. I managed to eat 1 1/2 in the office and come home with 2 1/2. I don't think 4 cupcakes in a span of two days is that bad.

My other birthday traditions include taking a day off from work and heading to the spa for a 90-minute massage and a manicure. Ahhh, what a lovely day.

Happy Birthday to me!
