Looks like I will be heading to Philly this fall. This is a city I have been wanting to visit for a while and this event looks like a really worthwhile event!

During the event, prestigious chefs and top doctors will team up in a cooking challenge to produce the best gluten-free dish.

Appetite for Awareness: a Gluten-Free Cooking Spree is moving to a new and fabulous venue. The amazing Philadelphia Cruise Terminal at Pier One offers 40,000 square feet of space for our celebration of the gluten-free lifestyle.

The Children’s Pavilion is new this year and is accompanied by family pricing! So, bring the entire family to this delightful spot right on the Delaware River. The kids will have a great time while the adults shop and enjoy a wide range of tasty treats prepared just for this event.

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness invites you to participate in the Gluten-Free Cooking Spree, event that joins together the medical and lifestyle aspects of celiac disease to educate both doctors and chefs about celiac disease and the gluten-free diet.

* Top chefs, doctors and reporters will be put on teams of three. Each team will have one chef, one doctor and one reporter. Together, the doctor, chef and reporter will work to create the best gluten-free dish.

* Attendees will sample the food cooked by the chefs and enjoy a large assortment of other gluten-free food options. Come hungry! All attendees will take home a fabulous goodie bag filled with treats from a variety of gluten-free vendors.

* A three-person panel will judge the recipes and award a prize to the winning team.

Enjoy gluten-free hor d’oeuvres, desserts, beer and wine. All food will be gluten-free!

Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General

As noted in the media this week and as blogged by Gluten-Free NYC, "Dr. Sanjay Gupta is Barack Obama's top pick for Surgeon General." As Gluten-Free NYC rightly reported, Dr. Gupta, CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent, is a colleague of Heidi Collins, CNN news anchorwoman and the spokeswoman for the National Foundation of Celiac Awareness. This "six-degrees-of-separation" (well, two) between Heidi and Dr. Gupta is promising. At least Dr. Gupta knows of Celiac Disease, probably more than most politicians and political correspondents.

After a little investigative reporting of my own, I discovered Dr. Sanjay Gupta participated in the Atlanta NFCA Cooking Spree in October 2007. Bringing Dr. Gupta on as Surgeon General could be a great thing for the Celiac Disease community. "The Surgeon General serves as America's chief health educator by providing Americans the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury." (http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/) The Obama administration with Dr. Gupta in that key medical role might just bring the awareness we need about the prevalence of Celiac Disease in this country and hopefully help us gain support from the US Government.

Gluten-Free Cooking Class in NJ

Gluten-free cooking class in a Shop-Rite?!?! How is that for going mainstream!!!

Colalillo Shop-Rite and Hunterdon Medical Center Community Nutrition department will offer a gluten-free cooking class at the Shop-Rite in Clinton from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 12.

An additional classes will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 19 at the Shop-Rite in Flemington.

Participants will sample and learn how to make and pancakes with fruit and fun toppings, hot and cold wraps, shrimp and asparagus risotto and other gluten-free treats.

Here’s how it works:
*Top chefs, doctors and reporters will be put on to teams of three. Each team will have one chef, one doctor and one reporter. Together, the doctor, chef and reporter will work to create the best gluten-free meal.

*A three-person panel will judge recipes. A food critic, a celiac specialist, and a child with celiac disease will make up the panel.

*National and local media will attend and cover the event.

* Winning team will receive a donation made to the hospital that the doctor on the team is affiliated with. All members will also receive a gift basket with a variety of gluten-free goodies!

* Winning team will be featured in National Foundation for Celiac Awareness monthly newsletter and on website www.celiaccentral.org.

**At the event, NFCA will honor Dr. Alessio Fasano from the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research. Dr. Fasano will be one of the expert judges at the event and a donation will be made to support the center's work.

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness had their first NYC cooking spree on March 2, 2007 at the Institute for Culinary Education. I Thought the evening was quite fun, but my most exciting part of the night was meeting so many great people in the Celiac community. I was extremely proud to talk about our NYC Celiac Disease Meetup Group as well as my blog. It was terrific to finally put faces and names together of fellow bloggers and Meetup Group members.
