Happy Birthday Gluten-Free Fun
Today is my birthday. To say it has been a really crazy year would be an understatement. I got really sick with black mold , moved, got healthy, got sick again with thyroid disease, and started getting better. I traveled to the Czech Republic, Canada, and Aruba. I made new friends and broke up with old friends. I worked, blogged, volunteered, and worked some more. I learned a lot this year about myself and others and feel very comfortable with who I am today. I don't think I could have said this 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. I think that comes with age and although some people are uncomfortable with turning older, I truly do think I have become wiser over the past year.

I have decided that my birthday present to myself this year is to make some resolutions. I need to slow down, sleep more, enjoy the little things in life, and take things one day at at a time. Below are two of my favorite posters and inspiration for this next year of my life.

Celiac Disease Lifer
Do you know anyone that's had Celiac Disease for more than 5 years? More than 10 years?
More than 30 years???

Yep, you do. It's me.

Dana, from Gluten Freedom Blog, asked me to share my story with her readers and I happily obliged. I feel that as someone that has been gluten-free and living with Celiac Disease for 31 out of the past 33 years, I have a really unique perspective in our community. Many people people feel that their lives are over after a Celiac diagnosis. I honestly don't know life any other way.

A Celiac Story from Erin: 30 Years of Experience

My Celiac story is longer than most, spanning more than 30 years. Although it was a long and bumpy ride at times, I truly believe being gluten-free for almost my entirely life and having Celiac Disease molded me into the person I am today.

Gluten-Free Fun Guidelines
I am not paid to write this blog, Gluten-Free Fun. I have a full-time job that is completely unrelated to the gluten-free world. I am lucky enough to have free products and books sent to me on a regular basis for testing and review. Once in a while, I even get a free meal at a restaurant. I tell my readers when this happens. Sometimes I like these products, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I reject products before they are even sent to me if I get an email or a press release that turns me off. For example, if a publicist sends me an email touting their gluten-free product as the "next big weight loss food", I will probably reject the free samples. Celiac Disease is my life. I don't eat gluten-free to lose weight, I eat gluten-free to live. Without a gluten-free diet, I am pretty sure I would not be here today.

As a blogger, I am entitled to my own opinion. I am also allowed to post on my own timeline. Apparently, this pisses off some companies. It is amazing some of the emails I get from companies that clearly want free advertising from me but on their terms. I do appreciate that vendors want me to put information up right away, but I don't always have the luxury of time to fit within their expected time frame. If a publicist nags me about a posting, I will probably take even longer to post a review and by then I already have a negative feeling about the company.

Dear publicists, PR folks, and gluten-free vendors, please keep in mind that this is my blog and my hobby. I provide honest reviews for food, restaurants, and gluten-free events I have attended. In order to maintain the integrity of this blog, I ask that you respect how I write my blog.

Gluten-Free Fun Turns Five!

Today is the five year anniversary of this Gluten-Free Fun blog. Wow. I can't believe it has been FIVE whole years already. Where did the time go?

I started this blog with the strong encouragement from my friend David Fischer, continued this blog when I realized I had a few readers, and branched out to Facebook and Twitter when I realized I had regular followers. I still cannot believe all of the support I have received and the friends I have made through Gluten-Free Fun over the past five years. I am both grateful and humbled.

Thank you all for your support over the past five years. I have said this before and I will say it again, if it wasn't for my dear readers I wouldn't keep going.  Thank you!!!

Announcing: The Health Activist Awards 2011

I first learned about WEGO Health via Twitter. This network of health advocates is a great resource for anyone that is living with a health issue and looking for tips and a great community of people living with the same illnesses. The topics covered on WEGO Health run the gamut from sleep problems, to asthma, and of course, Celiac Disease. I have discovered some great health leaders through the weekly #HAchats on Twitter as well as through the forums.

WEGO Health just announced their first annual 2011 Health Activist Awards. There are 12 awards in a variety of categories from the Rookie of the Year, to the TMI, to the Offline Crusader. Now is your chance to nominate your favorite blogger, tweeter, or health leader in the community. I encourage you to participate in these nominations as a way to thank those of us who provide resources to the Celiac world and beyond. Of course I would love to be nominated, but I really encourage you to nominate anyone you feel is worth of one of these awards. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Here is some additional information from the WEGO Health website

What better way to commemorate awesome milestones than by bringing everyone in the Health Activist community together to share what they love. We’ve created an interactive Awards Program to get you and your communities excited to share what has moved you, inspired you, and made a real difference in how you think about healthcare and living well.
What: The Health Activist Awards: 2011 – A WEGO Health Program created to reward Health Activists for their accomplishments over the course of a calendar year as well as to bring awareness, attention, and a voice to their pursuits.
Why: To recognize well-known Health Activists for their continued efforts but also to recognize and showcase the newcomers who have inspired us all with their passion and dedication and will make a huge difference in the online community.
When: Nominations will begin December 1, 2011. Winners will be announced in January 2012.
How: We want everyone to be involved so we will be taking nominations for each of the 10 Health Activist Award categories. After we review all nominations, a panel of Health Activist judges and WEGO Health Team members will come together to select the winner. Winners will be announced in January through a fanfare of posts, spotlights, and features. Each winner will receive an exclusive Health Activist Award Prize pack. Want to be a member of the Health Activist Judging Panel and help decide who will win the awards? Apply to be a judge here.
Did you say Prize Pack? Yes. In addition to the bragging rights and site badge – each Health Activist Award Winner will receive a collection of rewards geared to their Health Activism. These prize packs will include resources, opportunities, and ways to catapult each winner into 2012 with the tools to plan an incredible year of advocacy.

Gluten-Free Fun is Thankful
This has been a really crazy year for me. I was very sick at the beginning of the year and had no clue what was going on. I traveled to Eastern Europe alone, something I never imagined I could or would do less than 5 years ago. I met countless gluten-free fans and friends in New York City and beyond. I am sure I can make a list of a thousands things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, but here is a list of 5 things I am thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Gluten-Free Fun Thanks
  1. Family. My mom and my sister are my best friends. The laugh with me, cry with me, vent to me and let me vent in return. They are truly my biggest fans and I am beyond thankful to have them in my life. My sister also has Celiac disease so after almost 30 years of being the lone Celiac in the family, I now have someone to commiserate and celebrate Celiac with! I am also thankful for my dear Aunt who had been secretly following my blog and Tweets for months without me knowing. I now know you are reading and appreciate and love you for that! Thank you for your support and encouragement.

  2. Friends, Near and Far. I have grown closer to a friend over the past year by sharing some pretty awful experiences. It is amazing how the worst can bring out the best! I had friends offer up their homes and couches during my mold epidemic. I've had some friends that stood by me while others turned into middle schoolers. Also, I connected with some really amazing people over the internet who I am happy to call my friends. (See #5) I feel blessed for the friends in my life.

  3. Persistence. In the beginning of the year, I was sick. I was achy. I was having nose bleeds every day. I couldn't breathe. I dropped my gym membership and stopped riding my bike which I love to do. I had migraines... the list goes on and on. I was put on 14 different medications.  I had 27 medical insurance claims in a 2 1/2month period of time, yet I still had no answers. I could not accept that there was nothing wrong with me. I know my body and I know myself and I knew I was sick! With my persistence, I was finally diagnosed with mold poisoning. It was awful and I had to move. I am still not 100% but I needed to know what was wrong with me and I didn't give up until I got a diagnosis.

  4. Gluten-Free Travel. I try to go on a minimum of three vacations a year. This year, I went to Las Vegas in February for a friend's debaucherous bachelorette party. I went to the Czech Republic in April for my birthday and to get out of NYC which I thought was making me sick (it was!). Finally, I went to Port Stanley, Canada with my family in August. Too many people are scared to travel once they are diagnosed with Celiac and change to a gluten-free diet. I understand their fear, but this actually makes me really sad. I love to travel and I have been traveling and eating gluten-free my entire life. There was never a question of not going on vacation because I have Celiac. If I let Celiac stop me, I would not have had the pleasure of drinking my first gluten-free beer ON TAP in the heart of Prague or eating a muffin and sipping iced coffee bridge-side in Port Stanley, Ontario. I also would have also not launched my Gluten-Free Globetrotter website in April from the Czech Republic which promises some really exciting things in 2012!

  5. Gluten-Free Community. The power of community on the Internet is truly amazing. In the past year, I have met some really amazing gluten-free people that I admire and felt like I already knew from reading their blogs, Tweets, and more. I met gluten-free celebrities and brand new gluten-free bloggers both online and in person. Putting a face to a name is invaluable. Also, as leader of the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group I have become friends with many of my members and now socialize with them outside of our regular events. This gluten-free community is so supportive and I realize that even while being gluten-free for more than 30 years, I still need a supportive group of Celiacs in my life each and every day. I am so thankful to have all of these amazing gluten-free people in my life, both in-person and online, including (but totally not limited to) Andrea S., Candice C., Chris C., Craig P., Gabrielle S., Janelle P., Jill B., Kathleen D., Katie S., Kristen S., Lauren-Lucille V., Lindsay F., Selina T., Sloane M., Sue M... and so many more!

Happy Thanksgiving to all
of my Gluten-Free Fun readers and friends!

    Mini-Hiatus for Gluten-Free Fun
    Hello Dear Readers,

I wanted to let you know that my posts will be less frequent in the next week or so. In the spirit of being a true New Yorker, I am running myself ragged and need to step back from something. Unfortunately, that something has to be this blog for the time being. I have more than 12 "draft" posts ready to go for you all, but I just don't have the time or the mental energy to finish them up at the moment.

With a full-time job that is getting busier by the minute, a successful Meetup group that feels like a second full-time job, more social media accounts than I can count on one hand, and oh yeah... another freaking health issue shaking its ugly head in my direction (not mold related), I need to take a mini-hiatus from my beloved Gluten-Free Fun.

But not to worry, I will be back soon enough.

If you know me or have been reading my blog for the past 4 1/2 years, you know I can't stay away for long. I miss writing, miss reading your comments, and so much more. This blog has truly become an extension of me more than I could have ever imagined. My thinking cap has been on for months and some of my "big ideas" will come to fruition soon enough. It's going to be exciting times, but for now I need to listen to my body and my head and take a step back.

Please continue to follow me on Twitter and Facebook, I'll be there. I can't go cold turkey now, can I? :-P

Thank you for all being so faithful.

    xo,
    Erin, Gluten-Free Fun

    Opa! Gluten-Free Feast at Ovelia

"You can't be egotistical about food, you have to explore."

Did you ever have a gluten-free meal with amazing service that almost brought you to tears? Well, I had that last night at Ovelia Psistaria in Astoria, NY. The attentive service, the decadent Greek meal, and the amazing food blogger camaraderie made for a fantastic evening only blocks from my new apartment.

I was lucky enough to be invited to this blogger dinner by Judith, founder and editor of Fooditka.com. Although Judith and I had virtually "met" a few years ago, we never met in person. It was great to finally put a face, blog, and email name together. Also at the dinner were Meg of Harmonious Belly and We Heart Astoria (Another blog Judith also contributes to), Lindsay of The Lunch Belle, and Elena of The Gotham Palete. In my more than 4 years of writing this blog, I think this was the only event where I was the sole gluten-free representative. These ladies couldn't have been more welcoming. They asked me questions about Celiac and gluten-free food and seemed genuinely interested in my dining out habits. I was happy to educate these esteemed foodies about the navigation of a gluten-free diet in a gluten-filled world.

Prior to attending this dinner, I was honestly nervous to go. Ovelia Psistaria had just launched their "Rock n' Ribs Wednesdays" and when I saw the menu online I knew it would be a gluten-filled meal with lots of BBQ sauce and sides I would not be able to eat. I reached out to the restaurant via their Contact Us page and heard back within a couple of days. I got a response from Peter Giannakas, one of the owners and the chef of Ovelia. Peter's response started to ease my gluten-free fears. He said:
I can list all the items that are gluten free but that would be almost the entire menu. So instead I will list the items that you would want to avoid!  Also very important is to mention to your server about gluten-free restriction and to absolutely get a manager, who will be more than happy to address the issue to me and the kitchen so that we can take further precautions while prepping the meal!

    Items to avoid:
melitzanosalates, keftedakia, fried feta cubes, fried kalamari, kolokithokeftedes, fried squash and eggplant, spanakopita, monastiraki bifteki, olive brine pork (can be served without dumpling), mousaka, pastitsio, veggie mousaka, ribeye (avoid our genuine steak sauce), all our pasta dishes with the exception of the ouzo stir fry which is prepared with rice noodles
Wow, that was a Greek mouthful but also so reassuring. I was already off to an amazing start with Ovelia. When I responded to Peter that I was coming to Judith's Rock N' Ribs event, he did some kitchen investigation. He then replied:
So the sauces are not gluten free but if you would like i can smoke a rack or a half a rack without basting them with the bbq sauce! And maybe you can bring your own?
What?? I can bring my own sauce and you will leave some ribs "au natural" for me? Sign me up!! I wrote back to Peter to tell him I would indeed be there and would come with some of the new Guy Fieri BBQ sauce I got last week. BBQ Game On!

When I arrived at the restaurant, I met Peter within minutes. We spoke openly about the menu to come and he eagerly took my BBQ sauce to put on the smoked ribs. As I spoke to Peter with Judith about the menu, I became more and more relaxed. Peter said "You can't be egotistical about food, you have to explore." I am not sure if Peter realized how important this was to hear; these words alone were music to my ears. Peter, thank you for being so open and not brushing off food intolerances as a nuisance!

As the food began to arrive, I slowly drifted into a gluten-free Greek food heaven. Homemade family-recipe greek sausage (Ovelia Loukaniko) with lemon, halloumi (Greek cheese) with prosciutto, and at least 4 other (gluten) appetizers arrived first. The staff clearly pointed out which were safe for me to eat. The new Corn Dog Buttons were deep-fried sausage bites in a corn batter, but Peter mentioned there was not a dedicated fryer in the kitchen. Good to know. Next came out feta cheese infused with jalapenos. This is not a regular menu item but it is the filling to one of the deep-friend appetizers. It was so nice to enjoy a similar dish to what the other women were eating. Peter also brought out some halloumi chips were absolutely amazing. Think thin potato chips made entirely of cheese. You can't go wrong!

Judith, Meg, Lindsay, Elena, and I were quickly getting full off the abundance of appetizers but next up came our dinner. At this point, I barely had any room left but Peter's staff brought me out a rack of ribs made with the Guy Fieri Kansas City BBQ sauce and I couldn't let those pass by. I had three of the ribs which were really good and some of the side dishes including the oven-roasted lemon potatoes (A typical Green side and one of my favorites), french fries, and sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows. I only had enough room for a taste of these dishes and the sides since I was so full.

Throughout the meal, the staff continued to tell me the ingredients of all of the new dishes they brought out and tell me if they were gluten-free or not. Yes, we were at a food blogger dinner but I sensed the generosity and care of the preparation and presentation of the dishes were genuine. Chris Giannakis, the co-owner, "front of the house", and Peter's brother, came out during the meal to introduce himself and make sure everything was good. With all the food we were stuffing in our mouths, all we could do was eagerly nod and mumble thank yous.

If you are looking for authentic Greek food with a staff that understands the need for dietary alterations and seems to really care about their clientele, then Ovelia Psistaria is your place.

Thank you Judith of Fooditka.com for inviting me to dinner and Lindsay, Meg, and Elena for being so cordial and interested in learning more about being gluten-free.

A very special thank you to Chef/Co-Owner Peter Giannakis and Co-Owner Chris Giannakis for going above and beyond for a fantastic, delicious, and most importantly safe gluten-free meal at your restaurant Ovelia! I will be back very soon.

Gluten-Free Fun in Easy Eats Magazine
A couple of months ago I wrote an article for Easy Eats magazine. I had been a fan of this online magazine since it's inception in 2008, so I was thrilled to have this writing project. I am excited to announce my article has finally been published in this month's issue of Easy Eats.

My article, "Gluten-Free Support Groups: Finding Your Flock" is a personal reflection on growing up gluten-free, looking for a gluten-free "family", and then taking my knowledge of living my entire life with Celiac and giving back to the gluten-free community. I give tips about looking for your gluten-free community, how to run a support group, and spreading gluten-free awareness.

There are some big changes happening at Easy Eats which you can also read about in this Summer 2011 issue. I am beyond excited to be a contributor to the original Easy Eats magazine, but thrilled to see what's in store for the future of Easy Eats. Visit their website to sign up for email updates and to be a recipe taster.

    Happy Birthday Gluten-Free Fun
Tomorrow is my 33rd birthday. I am ok with this. Many people thinking aging is a bad thing, but I actually think that so far my 30s have been way better than my 20s. I am much more in tune with myself as a person than I was even just 5 years ago. As a tribute to my birthday, I thought I would share 33 things about myself that you may or may not know about me. Making this list wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.

    33 Gluten-Free Fun Facts
    1. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 1981, at the age of three, by a very forward thinking gastroenterologist. Hewas only 29 years old at the time of my diagnosis. I truly credit this man for saving my life.
    2. I have been writing Gluten-Free Fun since January 2007. To date, I have posted almost 570 posts.
    3. I am the lead organizer of the largest Celiac or Gluten-Free Meetup group IN THE WORLD!! (There are 71 gluten-free or celiac-related Meetup groups on Meetup.com.)  We have whopping 1,273 group members in the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group. I am very proud of this group.
    4. I talk to my mother every single day. She is one of my best friends. She calls me her very own “gluten-free celebrity”. This makes me laugh and realize how proud she is of me.
    5. I have one wonderful sister that also has Celiac Disease. I was diagnosed as a child; she was diagnosed as an adult. She grew up calling me a “Banana Baby” but little did she know she would also be a “Silly Yak” one day. I love you baby soucie!
    6. I have 545 fans on my Gluten-Free Fun Facebook page. I have 854 followers on Twitter. These numbers amaze me.
    7. I have one first cousin with Celiac Disease. I believe at least two more cousins and maybe even my dad have Celiac. They are in denial.
    8. I have twin nieces and a nephew who I adore more than anything in this world. Both of my nieces are gluten-free. They think it is hilarious that I have “no gluten” in my food too.
    9. I am addicted to the internet and social media. I really don’t know how ever lived without it. I have 258 blogs on my daily RSS feed and 163 of those are gluten-free related blogs!
    10. I have a day job completely unrelated to anything in the gluten-free community. I am the Director of Production at an education software company and I like to think I am shaping the minds of our country’s youth.
    11. I love to dance, love pop music and always dance while I cook in my 100% gluten-free kitchen.
    12. I grew up eating Ener-G foods bread since it was the only gluten-free bread on the market in the 1980s. Even with all of the delicious gluten-free breads on the market, I still buy this bread by the case a couple of times a year. It comes vacuum sealed. This is slightly scary to me.
    13. I have been featured in two Columbia Journalism School senior thesis projects about Celiac Disease. This is very flattering.
    14. I still talk to my best friend from Kindergarten. We have known each other for 27 years. She was one of the first people that knew about my Celiac Disease besides my family. Our favorite after-school snack growing up was potato chips dipped in mustard. I still eat that as a snack from time to time.
    15. I am no longer embarrassed to tell people I have Celiac Disease. It took me almost 25 years to get to this point in my life and admit that I have “food issues.” I can now openly talk about Celiac Disease and realize I have nothing to be ashamed of and my knowledge and experience can only bring awareness to others.
    16. I love to travel and have gone on at least five vacations by myself in the past 6 years. These have been some of my best experiences ever. I don’t let being gluten-free stop me which leads me to my next entry…
    17. I love quotations. Some of my favorites include:
      • “You can’t have a favorite place until you have seen them all.” (from a printed ad)
      • “You can never step into the same river; for new waters are always flowing on to you.” (Heraclitus)
      • “Just because you have a restricted diet, doesn't mean you have a restricted life” (Allergic Girl)
    18. I was on an episode of the Food Network’s show “Chopped” in 2009 where the cook was making gluten-free crepes during her bio. The episode is called “My Froggy Clementine.” She was chopped but not before you see me in my magenta sweater more than 5 times in a very tiny kitchen.
    19. I won a recipe contest in 2005 and I have a featured recipe in the book Beyond Rice Cakes: A Young Person's Guide to Cooking, Eating & Living Gluten-Free” by Vanessa Maltin.
    20. I buy URLs for fun. When I think of a good website name, I usually buy it. I need to stop buy and start executing some of these gluten-free projects. Stay tuned!!
    21. Some of the most amazing people in my life right now are people I met through the gluten-free community. I cherish these new friendships and love working with these people to spread awareness in our community.
    22. I have an online gluten-free store called Gluten-Free NYC Boutique. I inherited this fun website from a dear friend and fellow gluten-free blogger named David Fischer who passed away in 2009. David was the person who inspired me to start this blog. He was truly a pioneer in the gluten-free NYC blogging community. I miss David.
    23. I have been approached by random strangers at restaurants in NYC who ask me “Are you Erin from the Meetup group?” They recognized me from the NYC Celiac Meetup website because my picture is on every damn page. I am always caught slightly off-guard by this and get embarrassed but I do secretly love it too. If you see me, say hello.
    24. I am thanked on page x of the new book Allergic Girl by Sloane Miller. When I discovered this, I actually cried happy tears.
    25. I am the moderator and founder of the Gluten-Free Goodness photography pool on Flickr.com. We have over 560 members that post to this group and almost 5,000 pictures in the photo stream. I love taking pictures of my food and apparently so does everyone else in this group. Add your pictures today!
    26. My most viewed blog posting to date is a controversial posting about getting gluten-free food at McDonald’s. Apparently this post pissed off a lot of people. Three years later, I still get comments on this post.
    27. My favorite movie of all time is Grease 2. I can sing every song from that movie by heart and probably recite 99% of the movie lines. When I discovered that my roommate from college and one of my suitemates both loved the movie and also could sing every single song, I knew we would be friends for life. Love you girls!
    28. I do not eat oats, even certified gluten-free oats. Never have, never will.
    29. I’m not proud to admit, but I cheated and ate gluten a lot as a teenager. This was my personal form of teenage rebellion. I knew it was extremely bad for me but I still drank beer all the time. I was probably the sickest of my life during freshman and sophomore year of college due to this cheating and realize I might have done some serious irreversible damage. Now, I NEVER CHEAT; It’s just not worth it.
    30. My favorite number has always been 33. When I play roulette, I bet on 33 black. I’m turning 33 year. I have a feeling that this is going to be a great year!
    31. I currently have 7 boxes of gluten-free Chex on top of my refrigerator. This is not unusual for me, but some of my friends think it is weird. I love a bargain and a coupon so I get especially excited when I can stock up on gluten-free products on the cheap.
    32. I manage a map of restaurants, bars, and markets that can cater to gluten-free people in New York City. I think there are now over 170 places on this map. I update it when I can and I am always happy to add reader suggestions.
    33. If you have gotten this far on my list, I thank you tremendously. Without my dear readers and fans, I wouldn’t have this blog to begin with. Thank you for your feedback, comments, and emails. They truly do mean the world to me!

Pleased to Tweet You: Gluten-Free Fun
Last week, I was honored to be featured in the NFCA's Celiac Central March Newsletter. They have a relatively new featured called "Pleased to Tweet You" which features a prominent gluten-free "Tweeter". For those of you unfamiliar with the social networking site Twitter, a "Tweeter" is someone that posts regularly on the website via "tweets" which are brief 140-character conversations.

I was very late to the Twitter game and only joined at the end of September 2010 after being convinced by Dan of Renegade Kitchen and Jill of Glow Gluten-Free that this was THE tool to use on the Internet. They were 100% correct. In only one month of using Twitter, my blog readership jumped by more than 50% and my Facebook fan page nearly doubled in size. Clearly I had a been missing out on an entire gluten-free audience that I never knew about before joining Twitter.

Since September, I have connected with some really amazing gluten-free people and companies. I even attended the awesome Food Fete event last week that I had no clue about before reading a post on Twitter. For those of you bloggers or readers not on Twitter, I suggest you join today. I was afraid to get sucked into another social media website, but this is really an amazing and powerful tool. There are lots of symbols and abbreviations like @, #, and #FF that take some time getting used to, but you will quickly get the hang of it. Hopefully you will realize, like I did, that there is a wealth of information that can be expressed in 140 characters or less.

Here is my "Pleased to Tweet You" interview that I did with Cheryl of the NFCA last week. You can also find it on the NFCA's Celiac Central March Newsletter page.

    Gluten-Free Fun on Twitter

    Pleased to Tweet You

Each month, "Pleased to Tweet You" will highlight an individual who chatted with @CeliacAwareness on Twitter. If you’d like to be featured, follow @CeliacAwareness and say hello!

    Name: Erin Smith

    Find her on Twitter: @gfreefun

    Tweeting since: September 2010

    1. How long have you been gluten-free?
I was diagnosed with celiac disease as a toddler in 1981 so I am celebrating 30 years of being gluten-free this year!! I like to think of myself as a Celiac Disease veteran.

    2. What do you like to tweet about (events, recipes, news articles, etc.)?
Every morning, I tweet about my daily blog postings on Gluten-Free Fun (which has been around since January 2007). Throughout the day, I tweet about interesting gluten-free articles and blogs I read, gluten-free events, and also general tweets to friends I have made on Twitter. As the lead organizer of the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group, I also tweet about all of our upcoming events.

    3. Why do you follow NFCA (@CeliacAwareness)?
Besides thinking the staff of NFCA are all awesome, I think the materials that the NFCA provides free-of-charge on their website are really outstanding and thorough. Whenever @CeliacAwarness posts a new tweet, I go directly to the website to learn more. I can spend hours on the NFCA website looking at the both educational and entertaining materials including gluten-free tax tips, fun videos like “Sex and the Celiac,” recent celiac disease news items, and upcoming events.

    4. What's your favorite gluten-free dish?
I have so many gluten-free favorites, so this is a tough question. I love to cook but lately two of my favorites are Gluten-Free Bisquick Bacon Pie and homemade gluten-free lasagna. When I go out to eat in NYC, I love the Nutella galette at Bar Breton, the socca at Nizza NYC, and the nachos at Heartland Brewery Midtown West.

    5. What's one thing you can do now that you couldn't do before going gluten-free?
Since I was diagnosed with celiac disease at such a young age, I don’t know anything else other than being gluten-free. Over the past few years, I have accepted my disease more than ever before and I am much more open to actually talking about having celiac disease. I used to be embarrassed and not want other people to know why I was avoiding eating in social settings, why I had different bread, etc. In the past 5 or 6 years, I have fully embraced my gluten-free lifestyle so I spend more time being an advocate for celiac disease rather than being embarrassed and hiding who I am.

    6. In 140 characters or less, why should others join the gluten-free community on Twitter?
The gf community on Twitter is knowledgeable, passionate, and a great support system. I love "meeting" new people every day!

    Exciting Updates for Gluten-Free Fun
As we enter a new month, I am excited about what’s to come for Gluten-Free Fun this March and beyond.

This is me in 1981, right around the time of my diagnosis.
This year is my 30th anniversary of being diagnosed with Celiac Disease. A 30th wedding anniversary is your pearl anniversary and natural pearls are very rare. I’d like to think of myself as a natural pearl of the gluten-free world. Ok, this is probably the cheesiest comment I have ever said on this blog but I’m going there on this special anniversary. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease before there was the Internet, before there was a blood test, before you could walk into a normal supermarket and buy gluten-free products, and before celebrities were jumping on the gluten-free bandwagon. Thirty years ago, my doctor saved my life. I plan on doing a series of blog postings interviewing my parents and doctors from the past 30 years. I think I have a unique perspective of growing up entirely gluten-free and I plan on sharing this with my readers.

As you may have already noticed, I launched “Recipe of the Week” series in January as part of a New Year’s resolution. “Recipe of the Week”, which is posted each Friday, is my attempt to try one new recipe every week of 2011. So far, I haven’t missed a week. With a crazy NYC schedule, this isn’t always easy but these recipes force me to stop and pay attention to what I am actually putting into my body. This series of postings has gotten a great response from my readers and has really inspired me to move out of my comfort zone and try new recipes. Luckily, my successful recipes have outweighed my flops so I hope to continue this Friday series throughout the year.

I am launching a new topic called “Gluten-Free Fun Investigates”. I often read an article and feel like I am only getting half of the story. I don’t always have the time to dig deeper, but I really want to start doing some serious background checks and investigation gives into products, topics, and trends that I am really passionate about within our gluten-free community. I am prepared to work hard to give you the whole story behind some of your favorite gluten-free questions and topics. This articles won’t always be exactly what you want to hear, but at least I will attempt to give the truth and reality to my readers. If there is any specific gluten-free topic you want me to investigate, please let me know. I’m ready to dig up some gluten-free dirt!

There are two more secret projects I am hoping to unveil by April 1st, so stay tuned this month for clues.

Thank you for your continued support. Stick around to see what's to come!
