Gluten-Free Date Night in NYC

I met my friend Kristen, of the world-famous Wine With Kristen, through the NYC Celiac Meetup group many years ago. We crossed that casual support group friendship line ages ago and now we meet on a regular basis for dinner, treats, gossip, and of course, wine. There is something so comforting about meeting up with a fellow Celiac for a meal. You don't have to worry about being the annoying friend that needs to eat gluten-free while no one else does. You can both pick a safe gluten-free friendly place and just go eat. The other day, Kristen and I did just that to catch up and eat. We decided to meet at the new Pip's Place Gluten-Free Cakery on 39th Street and Lexington Ave. in New York City You know you have a really awesome friend who agrees to meet you for gluten-free dessert BEFORE dinner. After we each had dessert as an appetizer, we walked over to S'Mac on 33rd Street and 3rd Ave. for gluten-free macaroni and cheese and a Bard's beer. It was great to catch up with Kristen and safely eat gluten-free and delicious food. Here are pictures from our gluten-free dinner date night in New York City.

  S'MAC was the first restaurant ever to specialize solely in macaroni & cheese when they opened in 2006. S'MAC has been serving gluten-free mac & cheese since 2008. They currently have three NYC locations; we’ll be at the newest location in Murray Hill.  Every Meetup member is responsible for ordering and paying separately and then we are all dining together. The owner, Sarita Ekya, will be there to chat with us and answer any questions we may have. Sarita and her husband Caesar spent close to a year in recipe research and development to actually be able to offer ALL of their dishes gluten-free!

  S'MAC has 12 recommendations on their menu along with a Build Your Own so there is something to suit everyone's taste.  They also offer Reduced Lactose and Vegan options. (Link to menu)

  The new Murray Hill location is at 157 E 33rd Street between 3rd Avenue and Lexington.  The 6 train stops one block away.  We will be gathering in the back seating area of the restaurant.

Vegan and Reduced Lactose Options Now at S'Mac

S'Mac is one of my favorite take-out restaurants in New York City. They are the only mac-and-cheese place that I know of that has gluten-free options. They have now expanded their menu for vegans and those with lactose intolerance. On your next visit to NYC, this is a must visit! Thank you to Sarita and Caesar for their ever expanding menu and support of those of us who need to eat gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan!

REDUCED LACTOSE
If you are mildly Lactose Intolerant and can consume cheese products, you can ask for any menu item to be prepared Reduced Lactose for an additional cost. Your order will then be prepared using the Vegan Coconut Milk base instead of the Cow's Milk base. Warning: Please be aware that Reduced Lactose will still contain some cow’s milk cheese.

S'MAC now has a new dedicated takeout and delivery location serving the East Village. They hope that this space, separate but next door from their current 12th street space, will allow for a more comfortable dine-in experience and a more stream-lined takeout/delivery experience.

This week, from Monday February 9th through Thursday February 12th, everything on the menu will be 15% lower as an introduction to the new S'MAC. This includes all gluten-free products!! Be sure to stop in and visit S'MAC this week!

Gluten-Free at S'MAC

"S'MAC (short for Sarita's Macaroni & Cheese) is an exciting new eatery located in the heart of Manhattan's East Village.

[They] specialize in, you guessed it, Macaroni & Cheese! [Their] menu is simple yet delicious with a variety of "MACS" available. Come check them out -- you won't be disappointed! You can eat-in, take-out or for those days that you just don't want to change out of your pj's, S'MAC does offer delivery."

You can now order gluten-free S'MAC dishes in the East Village for an additional cost. I haven't had a chance to go yet myself (although it might be a good thing to grab for dinner tomorrow night) but it is getting great reviews in the NYC gluten-free community.
