A Personal Message to the NYC Celiac Community

After more than ten years of organizing the NYC Celiac Meetup group, I am stepping back from my leadership role as I embark on a new adventure. As you may have read last week, I am moving to California with my boyfriend who is starting a new job. I am taking my gluten-free consulting business bi-coastal and will continue to be a strong celiac advocate for our community no matter where I live.

It is with mixed emotions that I write this post today. I love New York City and the wonderful people I've met through the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group. It has become like my extended gluten-free family. Over the past ten years, the group has given me much more than I could have ever expected. I've met so many great people that were brought together by this gluten-free connection. Our group has grown to more than 2,000 members and we've had more than 400 events which continues to both impress me and surprise me each day.

I have seen friendships bloom between group members, marriages, births, and sadly even deaths of some of our members. I've met gluten-free travelers from around the world who've made one of our Meetup events a stop on their itinerary. We've shared hundreds of wonderful gluten-free meals together while supporting our fellow celiacs. It really has been an enriching experience for me. I not only gave my all for this celiac community, but I got so much back from my supportive members. This community is really such an important part of my life and I am going to miss it dearly.

I will continue to play a small role in the NYC Celiac Meetup group posting annual events, webinars, and maybe even hosting events when I am back in NYC for work or family events. But from January on, I am passing the gluten-free leadership role to a new organizer.

Thank you all for your support and friendship over the past 10+ years. I hope you all continue to support one another in the gluten-free community and that you keep in touch as I move west.

Be well!

WEGO Health Awards 2015 Nominee: Gluten-Free Fun

WEGO Health is an amazing website that works with health advocates to foster relationships with their health communities. It's important to remember that I am not only writing for the gluten-free community, but I am also living with Celiac Disease. WEGO Health helps build these communities, while providing the resources I need to be the best celiac advocate that I can be.

For the fourth year, I have been nominated for WEGO Health Activist Awards. I am completely blown away that this year I have be nominated for three separate awards: Health Activist Hero, Best in Show: Blog, and Lifetime Achievement. It is such a wonderful feeling to be recognized by my readers and peers for the advocacy and activities I coordinate within the gluten-free community.

According to the WEGO Health website, "The WEGO Health Activist Awards were created to embody the mission of WEGO Health: to empower Health Activists. We connect with so many inspiring Health Activists who raise awareness, share information, support their communities, and much more - often without recognition. The WEGO Health network is centered around Health Activists, so we knew it was up to us to tell these leaders how great they are! We wanted to celebrate those who have made a difference and thus, the Awards were born. We've since found that these Awards are one of the best ways to introduce new Health Activists to the online community and have community members say "thank you" to the leaders they love."

Click here to visit my WEGO Health page.
The WEGO Health Awards are accepting endorsements until January 31st, 2015 (This Saturday!) If you are a fan of Gluten-Free Fun, Gluten-Free Globetrotter, or the NYC Celiac Meetup Group, I would love if you could visit my nominee page and submit an endorsement. This can be done anonymously or you can include your name in the submission, this is completely up to you. You can also tweet and share to Facebook once you have submitted your endorsement.

I thank you in advance for helping me continue my advocacy with the gluten-free community. I do what I do for you, my readers, and the entire celiac disease community. Without this disease and this website, we wouldn't be connected. Even if you think celiac disease is an awful diagnosis, you are NOT alone. We are all in this together.

My 2014 WEGO Health Awards nominations

Best in Show: Blog
Whose blog do you absolutely love? Their writing is exceptional, their "voice" admirable, and their writing is just really worth reading. You think anyone wondering why patients or caregivers would blog about health should read this Health Activist's blog - it will make the case crystal clear. They have great info, raise awareness, and do whatever they can to help their community by using their blog. They may be active on numerous social platforms - but the blog is their bread and butter - and they are a great model of how to be a blogger.

Health Activist Hero
Sometimes the connections we make in online communities go above and beyond, truly changing our lives for the better. Is there a Health Activist you know whose content has opened your eyes, whose dedication has ignited the advocate within you, and whose work has accomplished things for their community members? Which Health Activist is nothing short of a hero to those they reach? They are the epitome of a Health Activist because they do whatever it takes to make a real difference – and they are.

Lifetime Achievement (This is the nomination I am most excited about!)
Year in and year out we come across some Health Activists who continue to rock the health world. Think of it as the Academy Awards of the Health Activist community. What leader needs to be recognized for their overall achievement over the years? Across mediums, with patients and other leaders, who are the true stars who continue to shine and don’t fit into one category because over time, they have done it all. Perhaps they even started their advocacy before Twitter… gasp! Recognize those giants of Health Activism that have stood the test of time.

Don't delay, endorsements end this week! Thank you in advance.

Pasta Flyer in New York City and Beyond!
Last night, the NYC Celiac Meetup Group and the Brooklyn Gluten-Free Meetup had a launch party for Pasta Flyer. Pasta Flyer is a new Kickstarter project started by Chef Mark Ladner of the award-winning Del Posto in New York City. In my eight years of leading this Meetup group, I think this was my most exciting event ever! It's not every day (or year) that you have a James Beard nominee from a four-star restaurant talking to your group in a small, friendly, intimate setting like this. The room was buzzing with excitement.

Held in the 100% gluten-free kitchen of Krumville Bake Shop in Brooklyn, we had a sold-out event! Throughout the evening our members got to meet Chef Mark Ladner, chat with him about his new Pasta Flyer project, and eat some amazing gluten-free food. Chef Mark prepared his famous 100-layer gluten-free lasagna, garlic dots (think garlic knots/popovers), and dried rice penne with caramel. As expected, the food was amazing and of course, gluten-free. It was so awesome to see so many smiling group members eating safe gluten-free food made by a gourmet chef!

Members of the NYC Celiac Meetup Group

Chef Mark Ladner making his gluten-free garlic dots!

Everyone in our Meetup group was slightly starstruck by meeting Chef Mark, who couldn't have been any nicer. We all were beyond appreciative for the attention he is paying to the gluten-free community through his pasta research and this new project. I was especially impressed that a chef of his caliber is not only going out of his way to learn about gluten-free food, but is also so excited to meet the gluten-free and Celiac community. You guys, he took a night off from Del Posto to cook for US! This was a wonderful experience!

Check out that view from the Krumville ktichen!

Whipping up some gluten-free focaccia bread

The point of our event was not only to eat gluten-free food, but to also introduce Pasta Flyer to NYC and the world. I really encourage you to check out the Pasta Flyer Kickstarter page and help make this gluten-free project a reality. This concept is going to revolutionize the food industry. It is going to bring gluten-free pasta to the limelight in a gourmet, yet affordable way. Please go to the page and back Pasta Flyer today.

Thank you Chef Mark for attending our NYC Celiac Meetup group event last night. It was such an honor!

Also, a special shout out to my dear friend Kristen, from Wine with Kristen, for her impromptu sommelier job last night!

A Gluten-Free EatUP! Grows in Brooklyn
I was approached months ago by an eager NYC Celiac Meetup member looking to make a difference in our local gluten-free community. Her ideas were grand but her mission was simple: to safely and happily feed those of us with Celiac Disease in the Big Apple. Finally, we can see the fruits of her labor. Deb Goldstein, of Levine's General Store, is co-hosting the first ever Gluten-Free EatUp! on February 9th.

The Gluten-Free EatUP! is a one-day marketplace of locally crafted gluten-free, taste-full delectables. Try a kimchi spiced grilled cheese, grab a gluten-free beer, and take home some sweets. There will be hot savories, sweets, packaged treats and more.

My GFF (Gluten-Free Friend) Kristen

What's a GFF? It's like a BFF (Best Friends Forever) but someone that is part of your gluten-free support system. It's your Gluten-Free Friend. Your #GFF is that go-to person who lets you vent about being gluten-free, goes out for a gluten-free dinner and/or drink with you, or celebrates being gluten-free and embraces everything that the Celiac Disease curveball has thrown your way.

The new "My GFF" program from Udi's is "aiming to help connect the gluten-free community and provide tools, recipes, and support for maintaining a healthy and joyful gluten-free lifestyle." Udi's recognizes that many deep friendships have been made over the years through a shared gluten-free bond and I couldn't agree more.

Through my eight years organizing the NYC Celiac Meetup group, my six years of blogging, and my obsession with social media, I have made a TON of gluten-free friends and I feel truly blessed about all of those connections. Out of all of the people I have met, there are only a small handful of people that have left the gluten-free friend world and have crossed over to "the other side." My friend Kristen is one of those people!

winewithkristen.com

Kristen, of the famous Wine with Kristen, is a Certified Sommelier with Celiac Disease living in New York City. We "met" via email in April 2010 about a gluten-free retreat in Vermont. Shortly after the emails started, a mutual Meetup group member invited us both to lunch. To say the meal was interesting is being very kind. (wink wink, Kristen!) Less than a month after meeting, Kristen offered to open up the doors of her lovely NYC apartment for a gluten-free snacks and wine pairing event. With her great personality and her kindness to volunteer an event in her home, I instantly clicked with Kristen .

Kristen and I on the porch at Good Commons

Over the past three years (which actually seems quite longer) Kristen and I moved from "Meetup friends" to real life friends. We started inviting each other out for dinner or drinks and talking less about our gluten-free lives and more about family, friends, and life in general. Towards the end of 2011, Kristen and I decided to work together to help plan a gluten-free retreat at Good Commons in Vermont. It was during this time of planning, emailing, and coordinating lots of gluten-free goodness that our friendship grew even stronger. It was a no-brainer to me that we would be roommates during the retreat weekend after all of the hard work we both put into coordinating the event. We ate well, drank well, and decompressed in the woods in Vermont together with 12 other gluten-free friends.

It was also at this time that I realized Kristen was truly someone I could count on. Not only was she stellar in helping to plan the Good Commons weekend, but I was dealing with a lot of stress in work and life in general and Kristen was an awesome listener and advice giver during this time. I trusted Kristen and confided in her, which was quite different from any other people I met through the Meetup group. I guess that is when Kristen officially became my GFF.

Kristen helping me celebrate my 34th birthday

Kristen and I meet regularly for food, drinks, and gossip in New York City. She lets me vent about the Meetup shenanigans on a regular basis yet stays out of the gluten-free drama. One thing I always admired about Kristen is that she dines out all the time, travels the world, and never lets Celiac stop her. This is how I try to live my life so Kristen's attitude towards Celiac resonates strongly with me. We are planning a fun-filled overnight in Atlantic City this fall and I am sure we will be friends for years to come.

I saw Kristen just last week at an Omission Beer and Udi's party here in New York City. Since Udi's is featuring #GFFs, I figured it was most appropriate to end this post with a picture of us at the Udi's party.

Cheers to you Kristen and thank you for being such an awesome GFF!

Do you have a #GFF? Share your story in the comments below and then head over to the Udi's Facebook page to share your story there too!

Gluten-Free Greek at Ovelia
Astoria, New York is a very Greek neighborhood. It is also where I call home. My Greek grandmother grew up here and 9 years ago I decided to move here which made my grandma very proud. "You are going back to your roots!" she said shortly after I moved here. I love it in Astoria and cannot imagine living anywhere else. I am a short subway ride from Manhattan and my rent is cheap for a bright, beautiful, BIG 2-bedroom apartment. Take that Manhattanites living in a shoebox-sized apartment.  :-)

With many Greek neighbors, comes lots of Greek food. I have blogged about Ovelia Psistaria in the past but want to share once again about how great this restaurant is to the gluten-free community. Ovelia has been so welcoming to me and feeding me gluten-free food over the past few years. Last year they were even certified gluten-free by GIG. Ovelia has hosted two New York City Meetup events where the entire 8-course meal was gluten-free. Yes, eight courses of gluten-free Greek deliciousness. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about their gluten-free menu, which is clearly marked with GF and V (vegan) icons. I love supporting small businesses and with food this good, I think you should make the trip to Queens the next time you are in Manhattan.

Learn more about Ovelia in this video. Pay special attention around 1:19 to see the GLUTEN-FREE highlighted on the menu.

Event: Gluten-Free Indian Cuisine and New York Wines

Wednesday June 12, 2013 from 6:15-7:45p.m.

Do you enjoy Indian cuisine? Do you like New York? Do you drink wine? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, this class is for you!
We have expanded this class to include more wine and more food pairings! This time we tackle Indian fare with New York wines. You heard me right, we have an expert Chef in Indian cuisine which will be a terrific pairing with the cool climate wines of the Finger Lakes. We will use all our senses in this class to showcase food and strive toward wine pairing perfection.
Have you ever felt intimidated by wine? Choosing a wine to go with your dinner make you nervous? This class will also give you some easy guidelines to look as if you know something about wine, even if you don't.
We will cover topics such as:
  • Going to or hosting a party? What type of wine should you bring/have?
  • How to order off a restaurant wine list
  • How to hold a wine glass
  • How to identify what you like (or don't) about wine Tips to pair your wine and food
You'll be able to ask anything about wine and get helpful tips to pick the perfect wine to go with any situation.
We will taste at least four great value wines from  New York featuring the Finger Lakes (think wines like Riesling)  along with wines from Long Island and Hudson Valley that you can enjoy all summer. In addition, Chef Mahima will prepare, present and provide three perfectly paired noshes of Indian fare. All food will be gluten free as well!!!
With these nuggets of knowledge, you'll be in the coolest wine-nerd in the room!

GF Mac & Cheese Time: Dinner at S'MAC
  • Let's celebrate Celiac Awareness Month with some gluten-free Mac and Cheese!

S'MAC was the first restaurant ever to specialize solely in macaroni & cheese when they opened in 2006. S'MAC has been serving gluten-free mac & cheese since 2008. They currently have three NYC locations; we’ll be at the newest location in Murray Hill.  Every Meetup member is responsible for ordering and paying separately and then we are all dining together. The owner, Sarita Ekya, will be there to chat with us and answer any questions we may have. Sarita and her husband Caesar spent close to a year in recipe research and development to actually be able to offer ALL of their dishes gluten-free!
S'MAC has 12 recommendations on their menu along with a Build Your Own so there is something to suit everyone's taste.  They also offer Reduced Lactose and Vegan options. (Link to menu)
The new Murray Hill location is at 157 E 33rd Street between 3rd Avenue and Lexington.  The 6 train stops one block away.  We will be gathering in the back seating area of the restaurant.
    Tuesday, May 7
    7-9pm
157 East 33rd Street, New York, NY

$1.00 RSVP fee (per person) will hold your spot and cover Meetup organizational fees.

The Sharing the Experience of a Gluten-Free Life

The Sharing the Experience of a Gluten-Free Life
New York, NY

Click on the links above to RSVP.

Curtis Brown is a psychoanalyst/psychotherapist diagnosed with celiac disease who maintains a gluten-free diet. He will be facilitating a group discussion on how it feels to be gluten-free in a world of gluten. He believes that, “like it or not we often stand out in the crowd because of our dietary needs. Navigating a safe source of food, learning the ins and outs of the diet, and feeling good about what we eat can be an emotional journey.”
Considerable focus is given to the medical and nutritional aspects of gluten-free living but many emotional challenges arealso encountered. For example, people often want to share how celiac disease or gluten-intolerance has affected his or hersocial life, dating, desire for traveling or willingness to negotiate eating out in non GF restaurants. Or, how maintaining a GFdiet has affected your family, friends and other important relationships. Others might want to explore what a reasonable levelof precaution is when attempting to adhere to a GF diet? I have heard some wonder if it ever gets easier and, if so, how longdoes it take.
Brown will lead an open discussion forum for people to gather to share their experiences while hearing of the experiences of others. The group will be open to newly diagnosed or to anyone wishing to share their experience of living gluten-free.
Brown’s website: www.curtisbrownlcsw.com devotes an entire section to the emotional challenges of living a gluten-free lifedue to celiac or gluten-sensitivity. He has maintained a private psychotherapy practice for close to 20 years. He previously was the director of a hospital-based program which provided support groups allowing him to facilitate well over 500 group sessions. He is a faculty member and supervisor for a post-masters training program in psychoanalyst / psychotherapy.

The cost for attending the group is $13 which includes the PayPal fee.
