7th Annual Evening with the Paul Taylor Dance Company to Benefit Celiac Disease Center

SEVENTH ANNUAL EVENING WITH THE PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY
TO BENEFIT CELIAC DISEASE CENTER AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

New York, NY, March 6, 2012 – The New York City Celiac Meetup Group will host the seventh annual Evening with the Paul Taylor Dance Company to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. The 7pm performance, featuring three masterworks by Paul Taylor – Oh, You Kid!, Beloved Renegade and Brandenburgs – will be preceded by a gluten-free light supper, provided by the Center, for special ticket-holders from 5:45 to 6:45pm in the theater’s Promenade.

“The Celiac Meetup Group is happy to host this fabulous event again after last year’s tremendous success,” said Meetup Group leader Erin Smith. “We’re providing our community with a great evening of dance while benefitting the important work of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.” Ms. Smith said that last year’s event drew more than 125 people with celiac disease.

“We are thrilled that the Paul Taylor Dance Company teams with the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University,” said Peter Green, MD, Director of the Center. “The matchless artistry of Mr. Taylor and his dancers is truly inspiring.” Cynthia Beckman of the Center added, “We’re grateful to the Taylor Company not only for helping to raise awareness about celiac disease but for the funds they help raise as well.”

Grandma Rose's Bake Shoppe is donating cupcakes for the dessert portion of the pre-performance reception.

The series of performances, begun in 2004, was created by Alan Olshan, the Taylor Company’s Director of Marketing and Communications, who has celiac disease.

Oh, You Kid! contains a Coney Island-style revue of vaudeville numbers and a melodrama featuring a damsel in distress. Beloved Renegade depicts the experiences of an artist – “poet of the body and the soul” – described in Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.” The New York Times called it “the best new choreography of 2008” and hailed Mr. Taylor as “among the great war poets.” Brandenburgs is one of Mr. Taylor’s magnificent collection of works set to music by a master of the baroque, and the dance’s exuberance matches the ferocious energy of Bach’s spirited concertos.

Tickets for the evening are $300, $135, $75 and $25. A portion of each ticket benefits the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University when the buyer mentions promo code CELIAC at the box office (63rd Street and Columbus Avenue); when calling 212.496.0600; or online at www.ptdc.org/tickets. A facility fee of $2 applies to all tickets, and service charges apply to phone and web orders.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company’s 2012 season, its first at Lincoln Center, features 22 dances by Paul Taylor and runs from March 13 through April 1. The March 13 performance is sold out.

Gluten-Free Celebrating with Schar
Last month, the NYC Celiac Meetup group partnered with Schar USA and The Celiac Diva to have an awesome holiday party. The people at the party were great, but the food was even better. As everyone walked in, they commented on how beautiful the gluten-free spread looked and tasted. We had everything from prosciutto-wrapped breadsticks, to crackers with goat cheese, to tons of cookies. The mood was festive and the best part was not worrying about what was on the menu because we could eat everything!

Anne Roland Lee, Schar's resident gluten-free expert, put together the amazing gluten-free menu while Lauren-Lucille, aka The Celiac Diva, opened her beautiful new home for the party. A great time was had by all and I was thrilled to be there.

Here's our Gluten-Free Celebrating video courtesy of Schar.

NYC Celiac Disease Meetup Group
In addition to having a day job in the educational technology world, writing two gluten-free blogs, maintaining multiple social media accounts, and attempting to have an active social life in New York City, I am also the lead organizer of the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group. WHEW! Yes, I stay busy!

As I mentioned in my June 2011 article "Gluten Free Support Groups" in Easy Eats magazine, support groups are an amazing way to build up your gluten-free community. When I "inherited" the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group almost five years ago, never did I expect the group to balloon to over 1,330 members. According to Meetup.com, there are 67 Celiac Disease Meetups worldwide and the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup Group is the largest by more than 900 members!

With more than 100 events under my belt, at least 10 events in the making, and new sponsorships every month, our group is stronger than ever before. Although hectic and even frustrating at times, I wouldn't give up this leadership role for anything. Our group is amazing and I learn something every time I hold an event. Whether it is a new gluten-free restaurant to dine in or an unfortunate"glutening" story, I can relate to (almost) all of my group members in one way or another. This group consists of people that are still waiting a Celiac or gluten-intolerance diagnosis to others that have been diagnosed for years, such as myself. This support community has been so helpful to me and I hope that others find my efforts helpful to them.

With 7 upcoming events on our fall calendar, I am without a doubt busier than ever. I have weekly calls with venues, tour operators, and sponsors; I exchange flurries of emails throughout the week from both vendors and group members; and I also try to moderate our ever growing message boards. If I can help just one newly diagnosed individual navigate their new gluten-free world, I feel like my efforts have paid off.

Membership to our NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group is free! We have group members that live in NYC or others that are simply passing through New York on a vacation looking for some gluten-free tips. We've have regular locals attend our events as well as guests from as far away as Australia. It is the virtual connections and the in-person meetings that keep me going.

Are you a member of the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group? How has the group helped you? Have you used our message boards to find restaurants in NYC and the five boroughs? I would love to hear from you in my comments section below. It's your feedback that helps shape our group and gives me ideas for future Meetups.

Dishcrawl Loves Gluten-Free

Back in June, I started following a company called Dishcrawl on Twitter. They were organizing social dining events in cities across the United States and Canada and I was intrigued. Dishcrawl is "a national foodie start-up founded on the premise that communities can be brought together through good food and good company, four restaurants in one night. Rapidly expanding into new markets, dishcrawlers can currently join monthly progressive food adventures in San Francisco, New York, Montreal, Ottawa, San Jose, the Tri-Valley Area, and the Penninsula. Dishcrawl is currently headquartered in the Silicon Valley."

I usually shy away from foodie events that are not specifically gluten-free with the fear of spending a lot of money for something where I can't eat anything. After seeing more and more cool events posted to the Dishcrawl calendar, I decided to reach out to the Dishcrawl team to see if they would consider hosting a gluten-free Dishcrawl in New York City. The Dischcrawl team got back to me in less than three minutes! No joke. Founder Tracy Lee was so excited to hear from me and learn about the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group and our gluten-free members. She mentioned that she had lots of gluten-free friends and quickly connected me with the Dishcrawl NY team, Evie and Rachel.

After many emails over the past few weeks, the Dishcrawl NY started their gluten-free restaurant research and Evie posted up the first gluten-free Dishcrawl to their calendar last week. I was beyond excited and quickly announced the event to our NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group. In less than three days, more than 25 tickets were sold! The enthusiasm for this event was so great that Dishcrawl NY even added 25 additional tickets. The event is on September 7th and as of today tickets are still available. More details below.

The Dischcrawl NY Gluten-Free event is open to anyone who wants to buy tickets and enjoy a night of gluten-free dining around NYC.

You'll experience physical postures to promote healthy digestion, improve your immune system, and stretch & strengthen your body. You'll practice mindfulness meditations to encourage acceptance, calm your nervous system, and relax your mind.
Then you'll get to meet other like-minded celiac's over GF pizza (and gf beer!) at Pie, right across the street.

Yoga Class @ CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing)
WHEN: April 30th, 1:15-2:45pm
WHERE: CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) 123 4th Ave, 2nd FL (between 12th & 13th streets), New York, NY 100

Gluten Free Pizza Party @ Pie

WHERE: Pie, 124 4th Avenue, New York, NY 10003-4903
WHEN: April 30th, after yoga class 3pm-??

HOW MUCH: Free to attend, buy what you eat.

Feedback from last year’s Yoga for Celiacs class:

"The Yoga for celiacs class was great! Elyse suggested a ton of poses / massage techniques that are great for helping celiacs relieve pressure in the abdomen. We should definitely have another yoga for celiacs class again soon." -Terry

“Just wanted to tell everyone how wonderful the Yoga for Celiacs class tonight was...
Elyse is a great teacher - we went through a sequence of poses to help with digestion, slow down the belly-stress, and help with pain, bloating, and digestive distress, all while stretching and strengthening as yoga does so well.
As you probably know, any kind of stress creates inflammation through our bodies - in our cells & our blood vessels, not just in the gut - and I left Elyse's class feeling relaxed and centered after a very stressful day - further proof that lowering my stress level always seems to improve my celiac symptoms. Really a great class. Thanks to Elyse!” -Claire

Recipe of the Week and Gluten-Free Bubbles Wrap-Up
This week's recipe of the week comes from an amazing appetizer I tasted at an event this week. On Wednesday night, our NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group had a gluten-free bubbles tasting at the home of one of our amazing group members, Sommelier Kristen Siebecker. This was the third time Kristen has hosted an event like this in her home and I was happy to participate and meet new people while tasting some amazing wines and eating gluten-free treats.

You might ask what a bubbles tasting is, as many of our group members did when the invite first went out. Bubbles are so much more than champagne! Bubbly beverages can also include prosecco, brut, and Spanish cava. As I learned on Wednesday, champagne is actually the name of bubbly wine from Champagne, France only. Kristen supplied us with five different wines to taste (yes, bubbly alcohol actually comes from wine!) and lots of delicious snacks.

Kristen has an amazing way of explaining all of the wines and pairings that she presents to the group. I know nothing about wines but never feel stupid during her events. She takes her time, gives funny anecdotes and quotes throughout the tasting, and makes everyone feel comfortable in her home. Please click here to learn more about Kristen.

Kristen had special guest Chef Matthew Wexler help her prepare the wonderful tasting plates. Chef Matthew and I have been emailing for close to a year now, so it was great to finally meet him in person. Chef Matthew is well-versed in gluten-free cooking and he was the lead chef in the gluten-free weekend at Good Commons last summer. Even during the regular weekends at Good Commons, he is happy to provide you with a wonderful gluten-free dining experience during your stay. To learn more about Chef Matthew, please click here.

Here is what was on our bubbles menu:
  • Sangier Cava, Spain
  • Canevari Prosecco, Italy
  • Domaine Saint Pierre Brut, New Mexico (Who knew?!)
  • Jalliance Cremant de Bourgogne Brut, France
  • Champagne De Montoux Brut, France

And on our gluten-free cheeses and snacks menu:
  • La Tur Cheese (sheep, cow, and goat milk) from Italy
  • Percorino Romano Cheese (sheep milk) from Italy
  • Glutino Pretzels (salty snacks)
  • Kinnikinnick Cinnamon Sugar Donuts (sweet snacks)
  • Chef Matthew's homemade kale chips
  • Chef Matthew's prosciutto-wrapped dates with honey and black pepper

As a bonus to our tasting, we had gluten-free BiAglut CioccoStelle cookies and Fette Tostate. Both of these products were a perfect pairing to the bubbles we were tasting. The Fette Tostate was a pleasant surprise since it acted like a palette cleanser between plates and tastings. I especially enjoyed this Fette Tostate with the La Tur cheese from Italy. These flatbreads come in small packages of four which would be a great snack to throw in your bag or a nice option to use in lieu of bread for lunch. The CioccoStelle cookies went especially well with the New Mexico Brut that Kristen provided. Until this event, I didn't even know New Mexico had vineyards. New Mexico is already on my list of states to visit, but now I can add vineyard tours to my NM itinerary!

BiAglut is an Italian-based company that is owned by Heinz. Their products are currently available in Italy, Belgium, Malta, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, and the United States. There are more than 60 products in their gluten-free product line including pastas, breads, flours, cookies, snacks, and desserts. For a complete listing of BiAglut, please visit their PDF catalog. To find BiAgult products near you, please visit their store locator. Thank you kindly to Heinz and BiAglut for sending us some delicious samples for our event.

We also paired our bubbles with Angie's Kettle Corn. As you know, this stuff is already on my favorites list so I was excited to introduce it to the group. One man said "I could die happy eating this kettle corn and drinking prosecco for the rest of my life." I had to agree! The Angie's Kettle Corn has the perfect balance of sweet and salty that went especially well with the Champagne. Thanks Angie's for the popcorn.

Overall, we had a wonderful night of conversation, bubbles, and gluten-free treats. Thank you again to Kristen for being such a wonderful hostess and Chef Matthew for making the best gluten-free surprise, prosciutto-wrapped dates. Although I don't have an exact recipe, here are some recipes from some of my favorite websites:

An Evening with Paul Taylor Dance Company to Benefit the Celiac Disease Center
I am thrilled to be part of a wonderful fundraiser this March to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. Although I have attended this event for the past two years, this is the first time I am hands-on in the organization. As an organizer, I have helped secure some fantastic donations, spread the word on blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as meet the wonderful dancers of the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Last Friday, I was at the beautiful dance studios on the Lower East Side of Manhattan taking pictures and enjoying a rehearsal. To be that up close and personal with such amazing talent was wonderful. I do hope you join us on Tuesday, March 2nd for this fundraiser and dance performance.

Organic Gluten-Free Dinner at GustOrganics
I am very excited to announce our next NYC Celiac Disease Meetup event. Please join us for a gluten-free, prix fixe dinner at GustOrganics on February 24th at 6:30pm.

GustOrganics is the first and only certified organic restaurant in New York and America’s first restaurant to use 100% USDA certified organic ingredients. We will be joined during dinner by Alberto Gonzalez, the founder and CEO of Gustorganics, to discuss gluten-free dining, organic ingredients, and sustainable living. Mr. Gonzalez’s everyday goal is to satisfy his customer’s taste buds while also sustaining our environment’s resources. He is very passionate about his restaurant so I am thrilled he will be joining us for dinner on
February 24th.

Now Serving 700 Members: The New York City Celiac Disease Meetup Group
I am excited to announce that the New York City Celiac Disease Meetup group has now reached 700 members!! In less than 6 months, we have added an additional 100 members to our group. As some of my readers know, I have been an organizer of this group since 2005 and I am very excited about how quickly this group has grown! It is a demanding volunteer job, but I really enjoy planning our events and meeting so many gluten-free people in the tri-state area.

Here are some fun Celiac Disease Meetup facts

  • Our group is the #1 largest Celiac Disease Meetup group in the world. (ok, there are only meetups in 2 countries, but still sounds impressive)

  • There are 25 Celiac Disease Meetup groups in 24 cities.

  • The NYC Celiac Disease Meetp group consists of 36% of all Celiac Disease Meetup members (1,984 total)

  • We have three active volunteer organizers (Erin, Liz, and Ben) and one honorary founding organizer, Shanel. We have also had many "guest organizers" over the past few years and are always looking for more volunteers.

  • The NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group was founded in October 22, 2003, making it the oldest Celiac Disease Meetup group.

  • We are a part of the Celiac Disease Meetup Alliance

  • The NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group has been responsible for at least two spin-off groups including The Jersey City Celiac Disease Meetup Group and The Long Island Celiac Disease Meetup

  • We have had 63 events over the past 5 years and have many more planned for the months and years to come!!

We always welcome new members, so don't be shy and join us at our upcoming events. I also encourage you to post to our message boards. This group has become an invaluable resource to those that are newly diagnosed as well as a gluten-free family of sorts to our veteran members.

Please visit our calendar for upcoming events this weekend and beyond.

Thank you again for all of your support. Without our group member participation and ideas, the New York City Celiac Disease Meetup would not be where it is today.
