Gluten-Free in New York City Updates
If you follow me on Gluten-Free Globetrotter, you might have seen my post on Friday. Over the past seven years or so, I have been maintaining a map of New York City's gluten-free friendly restaurants. This is a never-ending process because restaurants in NYC open and close with the blink of an eye sometimes. Nevertheless, I have committed to keeping this updated over the next few months. I hope you find this helpful and that you share with your friends.

With more than 150 places currently on the map and at least 200 more to add, this is definitely a HUGE project. If I am missing any of your favorite restaurants, please send me an email at gfglobetrotter@gmail.com.

Gluten-Free at NYC Restaurant Week 2014

Today starts the beginning of New York City's Restaurant Week. This is actually more like a restaurant month where you can enjoy $25 lunches and $38 dinners in top restaurants across New York City. In the past, I have avoided Restaurant Week because there were limited gluten-free options. This year, I decided to do my research and was floored by how many gluten-free options are now on the menus. I have compiled a list of more than thirty restaurants that have decent gluten-free options on their prix fixe menus over the next month. The only problem I see is not having enough time or money to eat at all of these great restaurants!

Click here to access the complete list of gluten-free options at NYC Restaurant Week. Bookmark the page. I will be updating it throughout the month as I learn of even more gluten-free menu options!

Gluten-Free at Del Posto Ristorante in New York City
I don't even know where to start this post. I am still reveling in the memories of eating one of the best meals of my life last week at Del Posto Ristorante in New York City. I've been watching Del Posto for a while now once I learned they were trying to make a gluten-free version of every item on their menu. Then, after I saw this video, I knew I had to go. Well, restaurant dreams do come true, my friends. Last Friday, I had an impressive multi-course tasting menu carefully prepared by Chef Mark Ladner.

I recently connected with Chef Ladner via Twitter. (God, I love the power of social media). I saw a news item about his upcoming gluten-free Pasta Flyer project and I got excited. (stay tuned for exciting details later this week!) Quick, healthy, and gluten-free pasta bowls for busy people on the go? Where do I get one?! Chef Ladner and I started actively emailing to chat about this new project and then I got invited in for lunch.

PINCH ME!

The chef himself invited little old ME for lunch. Flattered, honored, and beyond excited are just a few of those emotions that flooded through me. To say I was nervous to eat lunch was an understatement. And this wasn't nerves of being afraid of gluten, this was nervous energy to finally eat at one of my bucket list restaurants in the world!

The beautiful dining room at Del Posto. Behind those stairs sits a live pianist!

My meal was extraordinary. Dish after beautifully-plated gluten-free dish was served to me by a steady stream of extremely professional waitstaff. Service was impeccable and as I watched the busy dining room, I knew I wasn't get special treatment because I am a blogger. This was just how it is at Del Posto. Professional and luxury dining at its best. There is a reason Del Posto has "a four-star New York Times rating, one Michelin star, a Relais & Chateaux distinction, a grand award from The Wine Spectator and five Mobile Diamonds." This is dining at its absolute finest! Chef Mark Ladner is also a 2012 and 2013 James Beard Award nominee!

Not only was the food gorgeous and the service great, but the Chef went out of his way to talk to me during and after my meal. I felt very honored that Chef Ladner came and sat with me to talk about the Celiac community, his gluten-free trial and error in the kitchen, and how he wants every diner in his restaurant to be treated equally. There is no judgement if you have allergies, preferences, or Celiac needs at Del Posto. You are a customer and you will be fed. Simple as that.

Now on to the food! My captions will do these dishes no justice. I was too busy eating and admiring each dish to remember the exact names of the food. I just know it was beautiful and delicious and all gluten-free!

Dehydrated rice penne

Local, spring vegetable salad

Veal ravioli with asparagus

The thing that really impressed me most about Chef Ladner is his dedication to getting his gluten-free recipes just right. He uses Thomas Keller's Cup 4 Cup flour blend in the kitchen. He spent YEARS getting the pasta just right. And let me tell you, he nailed it! Fluffy, airy focaccia bread. 100-layer lasagna with the thinnest gluten-free noodles I have seen in my life! Ravioli!!! He puts a tremendous amount of effort into each gluten-free dish to make sure the Celiac customer's dining experience is no different from a "regular" customer. Chef Ladner does not have celiac nor is he gluten-free, he just makes delicious food and accepts the challenge of gluten-free cooking. I truly believe he has gone above and beyond for the gluten-free customer and is one of the most impressive chefs I've ever met who is feeding the gluten-free community.

Gluten-free focaccia bread with rosemary and thyme

I never eat fish because I am always afraid it's going to be "fishy." This halibut was perfect.
Chef, please note, you got me to eat fish. That's a HUGE accomplishment in itself!

100-layer gluten-free lasagna. Yes, you read that correctly... ONE HUNDRED LAYERS

Del Posto is definitely a special occasion restaurant. This would be perfect to celebrate birthdays, retirements, or anniversaries. It might be a bit pricey for some people, but it is definitely worth every dollar. If you are looking to get a taste of what Del Posto has to offer, I highly recommend lunch.  At $39 per person for a prix fixe lunch, you are getting quite a bargain at this high-end restaurant. Make your reservations early because they fill up quickly. This is not a place to be missed.

Palette cleanser: rhubarb granata with rhubarb compote and cucumber ice

Butterscotch semi freddo with plums and cherries

Swan cappucino

Housemade "candies" including edible rice paper filled with champagne vinaigrette caramel.
AMAZING!!

Presented to me as "chocolate with some chocolate on top of chocolate"

Thank you so much Chef Mark Ladner and the staff of Del Posto for such an amazing dining experience. This post cannot really express how much I appreciate what Chef Ladner is doing for the gluten-free community. He has raised the bar for gluten-free dining to a new all-time high! The Chef's approach to making the gluten-free dining experience so "normal" is what stood out to me the most... after the delicious food, of course. Instead of seeing our dietary restrictions as an annoyance, Chef Ladner has embraced the challenge of gluten-free cooking. In my opinion, there are very few people that do this for our community. My lunch last Friday was so special to me and I feel lucky that we made the connection via Twitter.

I cannot wait to help share the Pasta Flyer efforts in the upcoming weeks. If this meal at Del Posto is any indication of what's to come with Pasta Flyer, we are in EXCELLENT hands.

THANK YOU, CHEF MARK LADNER!

Side note: I met a lovely woman dining next to me who wondered if I was a food critic. I was beyond flattered. I told her I am a gluten-free blogger and she proceeded to tell me her son-in-law had been diagnosed with Celiac Disease just two weeks ago! She said as a big foodie living in Europe, he was devastated. I told her he shouldn't be and that I was living proof that life goes on. I was sitting eating at Del Posto, wasn't I? I wished her son-in-law well and hope that he soon enjoys (gluten-free) food again!

Chef Ladner Creates Gluten-Free Magic at Del Posto
Del Posto, in New York City, has been on my radar for a while now. When I first read on Serious Eats that they launched and entirely gluten-free pasta menu in 2013, I was really excited and wanted to learn more. I started doing some research, learning that Del Posto is co-owned by Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich and Lidia Bastianich. My mom and I have been fans of Lidia's for years, always stopping to watch her cooking shows on PBS. I kept Del Posto in the back of my mind for any upcoming celebrations but kind of forgot about it.

Then two weeks ago, Del Posto came back onto my radar with gusto. Both Gluten-Free Philly and Pasta's Kitchen posted the video below and I was blown away. Chef Mark Ladner speaks candidly and and professionally about keeping customers happy and not letting anyone leave his restaurant dissatisfied. He wants everyone at his restaurant to enjoy their dining experience, regardless of their dietary restrictions. Chef Ladner and his team did their research and made gluten-free magic in their Del Posto kitchen using Chef Thomas Keller's Cup4Cup gluten-free flour.

I applaud Chef Ladner and the Del Posto team for their support of our community by embracing the gluten-free pasta challenge, rising to the true definition of hospitality, and welcoming the gluten-free community.

My birthday is coming up and I am hoping this is a good reason to finally splurge on a complete gluten-free dinner at Del Posto!

Chef Mark Ladner of NYC's Del Posto Creates Gluten-Free Versions of Entire Pasta Menu from Forklift on Vimeo.

"Our ultimate goal is when an entire table is enjoying one pasta, perhaps two or three of those people would be having gluten-free version of the exact same pasta and unless you heard the initial conversation, you would never know the person next to you is having something different from you and that is what makes great dining."  -Chef Mark Ladner

Thank you Chef Ladner on behalf of the gluten-free community! I hope to thank you in person soon.

Globally Gluten-Free in New York City
One of the best things about living in New York City is all of the amazing food options we have available to us. There are cuisines from around the world, many which are naturally gluten-free, that are only a subway ride away. Last week, I posted on my Gluten-Free Globetrotter website a list of gluten-free friendly restaurants in NYC that will allow you to travel the world without ever leaving the Big Apple.

For your convenience, I put together a cool map using a new app called CityMaps. This app is free to download and you can follow me on CityMaps @GlutenFreeGlobetrotter for future gluten-free maps across the world.

New 100% Gluten-Free Bakery in New York City: By The Way Bakery

On a busy Friday morning, I had the pleasure of meeting Helene Godin, the powerhouse behind By the Way Bakery, the new 100% gluten-free bakery in Manhattan. Helene started her gluten-free bakery, By the Way Bakery, back in 2011 in Hastings-on-Hudson and then decided to bring her delicious baked goods south to Manhattan. From reading about Helene and watching her on the Good Life Project (watch this!!) to our pleasant emails before my visit, I could tell I was about to meet a very happy, kind, and caring individual who wanted to feed her customers safely and deliciously.

Once I stepped into By the Way Bakery at 2442 Broadway on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, I was not disappointed. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and all of the customers were happy. My favorite quote of the morning was from a gluten-eating customer who said "I think you removed the gluten and added crack, I am addicted to these baked goods!" As you know, for a gluten-eating person to say anything good about gluten-free food is a MAJOR compliment.

Helene and I chatted about the bakery both here and in Hastings-on-Hudson (where all of the products are baked each day), the product ingredients, and  the new Kosher certification which was easy to come by since everything in the bakery is already dairy-free. As we started talking more in-depth about the ingredients, Helene showed me the recipe book for all of her products and the ingredients of every single item used in the bakery. This was HUGELY impressive. You could see the manufacturer labels for all of the ingredients by flipping through the binder that Helene was more than happy to share with me and every customer that asks when they come into the bakery. I love the transparency that By the Way Bakery has with their customers. No surprises about what goes into the gluten-free/dairy-free products you are about to eat!

Helene was overly generous with the gluten-free samples she sent me home with and I know a few extra gym sessions would be needed this past weekend. I had a half of a banana muffin and a half slice of carrot cake for breakfast when I got to my office. The first thing I noticed about the food was how moist it was. Gluten-free baked goods tend to be really dry, but not these products. They were flavorful, moist, and delicious. I also tried a sour cherry coffee cake and another mini cake (can't remember what kind, just know it was good.) Helene also gave me a chocolate mini cake but I decided to save that for my friend.

It may sound cliche but By the Way Bakery is awesome. Plain and simple. I would go as far to say that this might be one of the BEST gluten-free bakeries I have ever been too and probably my new favorite gluten-free bakery in New York City. Go out of your way to go here or in Hastings-on-Hudson if you find yourself north of the city. You will not be disappointed!

NYC Gluten-Free Bakeries

With the announcement on Friday that the NYC cupcake giant Crumbs is opening a 100% gluten-free store in New York City this October, there will soon be six 100% gluten-free bakeries in Manhattan. For an island that only had one gluten-free bakery less ten years ago (Happy Happy Happy which is now closed), having sixretail shops selling gluten-free baked goods is kind of a big deal for gluten-free New Yorkers. As a matter of fact, I think this is kind of a big deal for any city in the United States. Lower Manhattan seems to be the hot spot with 3 of the 6 gluten-free bakeries south of 14th Street. Getting on your walking shoes, loosen your belts, and get your gluten-free sweet on!

Update 1/6/2014
By The Way Bakery: 2442 Broadway, between 90th and 91st Streets (now open!)

Read more about BabyCakesNYC

Please note: I have confirmed that all of the above bakeries are 100% gluten-free. There are no gluten ingredients used at any of the bakeries I have listed!

Crumbs Gluten-Free Now Open in New York City

Today is the day! The popular cupcake shop Crumbs is finally opening their very first 100% gluten-free bakery right here in New York City. All of these products will be produced in a gluten-free and peanut-free bakery and delivered fresh on a daily basis to the store. This will be New York City's 6th 100% gluten-free bakery and probably one of the most popular.

According to a press release from Crumbs in September: "By adding gluten-free alternatives to our already distinctive assortment of gourmet cupcakes and desserts, we are truly opening our doors to a whole new group of consumers who may not have had the chance to taste our desserts before," says Julian R. Geiger, President and Chief Executive Officer of Crumbs Bake Shop, Inc. "Now, those who live a gluten-free lifestyle will be able to enjoy the Crumbs experience."

Located just south of Union Square in the heart of NYU land, Crumbs is in a prime location. You can reach Crumbs Gluten-Free via public transportation on the A/B/C/D/E/F/M trains to West 4th Street or the N/R trains to 8th Street. There is even a New Jersey PATH train stop right near by.

Check out their impressive gluten-free menu!

My GFF (Gluten-Free Friend) Kristen

What's a GFF? It's like a BFF (Best Friends Forever) but someone that is part of your gluten-free support system. It's your Gluten-Free Friend. Your #GFF is that go-to person who lets you vent about being gluten-free, goes out for a gluten-free dinner and/or drink with you, or celebrates being gluten-free and embraces everything that the Celiac Disease curveball has thrown your way.

The new "My GFF" program from Udi's is "aiming to help connect the gluten-free community and provide tools, recipes, and support for maintaining a healthy and joyful gluten-free lifestyle." Udi's recognizes that many deep friendships have been made over the years through a shared gluten-free bond and I couldn't agree more.

Through my eight years organizing the NYC Celiac Meetup group, my six years of blogging, and my obsession with social media, I have made a TON of gluten-free friends and I feel truly blessed about all of those connections. Out of all of the people I have met, there are only a small handful of people that have left the gluten-free friend world and have crossed over to "the other side." My friend Kristen is one of those people!

winewithkristen.com

Kristen, of the famous Wine with Kristen, is a Certified Sommelier with Celiac Disease living in New York City. We "met" via email in April 2010 about a gluten-free retreat in Vermont. Shortly after the emails started, a mutual Meetup group member invited us both to lunch. To say the meal was interesting is being very kind. (wink wink, Kristen!) Less than a month after meeting, Kristen offered to open up the doors of her lovely NYC apartment for a gluten-free snacks and wine pairing event. With her great personality and her kindness to volunteer an event in her home, I instantly clicked with Kristen .

Kristen and I on the porch at Good Commons

Over the past three years (which actually seems quite longer) Kristen and I moved from "Meetup friends" to real life friends. We started inviting each other out for dinner or drinks and talking less about our gluten-free lives and more about family, friends, and life in general. Towards the end of 2011, Kristen and I decided to work together to help plan a gluten-free retreat at Good Commons in Vermont. It was during this time of planning, emailing, and coordinating lots of gluten-free goodness that our friendship grew even stronger. It was a no-brainer to me that we would be roommates during the retreat weekend after all of the hard work we both put into coordinating the event. We ate well, drank well, and decompressed in the woods in Vermont together with 12 other gluten-free friends.

It was also at this time that I realized Kristen was truly someone I could count on. Not only was she stellar in helping to plan the Good Commons weekend, but I was dealing with a lot of stress in work and life in general and Kristen was an awesome listener and advice giver during this time. I trusted Kristen and confided in her, which was quite different from any other people I met through the Meetup group. I guess that is when Kristen officially became my GFF.

Kristen helping me celebrate my 34th birthday

Kristen and I meet regularly for food, drinks, and gossip in New York City. She lets me vent about the Meetup shenanigans on a regular basis yet stays out of the gluten-free drama. One thing I always admired about Kristen is that she dines out all the time, travels the world, and never lets Celiac stop her. This is how I try to live my life so Kristen's attitude towards Celiac resonates strongly with me. We are planning a fun-filled overnight in Atlantic City this fall and I am sure we will be friends for years to come.

I saw Kristen just last week at an Omission Beer and Udi's party here in New York City. Since Udi's is featuring #GFFs, I figured it was most appropriate to end this post with a picture of us at the Udi's party.

Cheers to you Kristen and thank you for being such an awesome GFF!

Do you have a #GFF? Share your story in the comments below and then head over to the Udi's Facebook page to share your story there too!

In Rememberance
I had a post ready for today but just didn't feel right putting it up. I am a New Yorker. I was in Manhattan watching in disbelief from the fire escape of my office building the day of the terrorist attacks. I felt numb that day. My heart still breaks when I think of magnitude of tragedy our country suffered that day, weeks, months, and even 12 years later.

Never Forget.

Gluten-Free at Summer Streets NYC
Three Saturdays a summer, New York City becomes even more awesome than normal. Summer Streets closes down Park Avenue from 72nd Street all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge. For those of you unfamiliar with NYC, this is a HUGE deal. This is nearly 7 miles of no cars. No honking horns, no crazy taxi drivers, no buses spewing their fumes. These 6.9 miles are pedestrian, biker, roller blader, and skateboard bliss. This is honestly one of my favorite events of the year and each year this gets better.

What made the 2013 Summer Streets kick-off so great this year? Certainly not the weather. (I donned my bright yellow poncho to avoid the rain!) It was the abundance of gluten-free options at the Whole Foods Market City Picnic at the Midtown rest stop at 25th Street and Park Ave. This year, there were at least five companies giving out gluten-free samples. This is practically unheard of at public events. Usually you can only get this many gluten-free samples at a gluten-free vendor fair.

Thanks to Whole Foods NYC and Summer Streets for hosting the event. And a special thanks to the gluten-free vendors including Udi's Gluten-Free, Applegate Farms (Udi's gluten-free buns with the hotdogs would have been a nice bonus!, Garden Lites, Honest Tea, CalNaturale Svelte, Organic Valley, Cabot Cheese, SweetLeaf Iced Teas, and Nature's Path. (I know I am missing a few, but I can't remember who?!)

Weather permitting, I will be at Summer Streets again tomorrow.
Will I see you there?! Come find me!
