Celiac Disease Awareness Night with the San Jose Earthquakes

One of the things I really was missing since my move to the West Coast was being really active in the celiac community. I did start a Santa Cruz Celiac group on Facebook and also became a co-organizer of the Santa Cruz Gluten-Free Meetup group. It just hasn't been quite the same as my involvement in the celiac community as when I lived in New York City. When the opportunity arose last month to help the Celiac Community Foundation for Northern California plan a summer fundraiser, I jumped right in.

I am so excited to announce Celiac Disease Awareness Night with the San Jose Earthquakes. This is a big game between the San Jose Earthquakes and their rivals, the Los Angeles Galaxy which will be held at Stanford Stadium. I am so excited for a few reasons

  1. It's a fundraiser to benefit the Celiac Community Foundation for NorCal and Camp Celiac
  2. I've never been to a professional soccer game.
  3. I've never been to Stanford University.
  4. This "California Clasico" rivals match between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Los Angeles Galaxy is so popular that it usually sells out ever year.
  5. There is going to be a gluten-free TACO TRUCK! (Thank you Oaxacan Kitchen Mobile!)
  6. There are fireworks after the game.
If those aren't enough reasons to run and buy tickets to this game, I don't know what is! I can't wait to meet more people living with celiac disease in the San Francisco Bay area as well as enjoy an MLS game with fireworks.

Celiac Disease Awareness Night
San Jose Earthquakes v. L.A. Galaxy @ Stanford Stadium
Saturday, July 1st
Game starts at 7:15PM

Celiac Disease Awareness Night with the Ottawa Senators
I was super excited to learn about this Celiac Awareness Night with the Ottawa Senators. My Canadian family is obsessed with hockey, it's in their blood. Also, the Canadian Celiac Association was the first national organization that my family joined because my grandma lived in Canada. The CCA was also a wonderful host for me this summer in St. John's, Newfoundland at their national conference. So when I saw they were having a celiac hockey fundraiser night, I knew I had to share the news.

Please read below about the event in March and buy your tickets!

We are pleased to announce that we have teamed up with the Ottawa Senators to organize a Celiac Disease Awareness Night on Saturday, March 4th at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Your purchase will not only entitle you to enjoy some exciting Saturday night hockey, but the Ottawa Senators will donate a portion of your ticket price to the CCA to help support our important awareness, research and restaurant training programs.

It’s on a Saturday night, so bring the whole family and have a great time! You’ll watch the Sens face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Canadian Tire Centre is proud to offer gluten-free food and beverage options.

You can choose from the variety of pricing options. To browse and buy, with part of your ticket price being donated to the CCA, you MUST visit this page:
www.ottawasenators.com/CELIAC
Be sure to use the promo code CELIAC when you complete checkout.

The Canadian Tire Centre is easily reached, as it is situated right beside Ottawa’s Highway 417, the major thoroughfare of the city. We encourage you to stay for the weekend and enjoy all that Ottawa has to offer! You can easily get to the arena from any downtown hotel – there is direct bus service with OC Transpo.

Please email cca.communications@celiac.ca if you have any questions. See you on the ice!

Exclusive Interview with a Celiac Fundraising Superstar
Alan and I at the 2013 Celiac Gala in NYC
Over the eight years I have been organizing the NYC Celiac Meetup group, I've had the opportunity to meet some really amazing people living with Celiac Disease. These people are everyday New Yorkers with exciting jobs and a passion for raising Celiac awareness. Alan Olshan, the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Paul Taylor Dance Company, is one of those people that I met through our group.

I cannot exactly remember the first time Alan and I met, but I feel like we have been friends forever. Alan comes to each Meetup with a smile and a friendly attitude. Talking hockey and baseball to some members or modern dance and classical music to others. We've shared many delicious gluten-free meals and joked about other flops (tepid rolls, yuck!). He has always leant a friendly ear which is always much appreciated. He introduced me to modern dance and even let me sit in on a prestigious rehearsal of the Paul Taylor Dance Company. He's become a real friend and ally in the NYC Celiac scene.

A few years ago, I started helping Alan with promotion of a Celiac fundraiser he put together with the Paul Taylor Dance Company to raise awareness and funds for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. This year marks the 9th year of this fundraiser and I wanted to sit down (via email) to ask Alan some questions about the event, Celiac, and what has changed over the years.

Join Alan and I on Tuesday, March 18th at the 9th Annual Paul Taylor Dance Company fundraiser at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for a gluten-free cocktail party and stunning performance by the company itself. Click here for more information about purchasing tickets.

Interview with Alan Olshan, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Paul Taylor Dance Company

Gluten-Free Fun: What is the Paul Taylor Dance Company?
Alan Olshan: After studying at Syracuse and Juilliard, Paul Taylor began to dance professionally and choreograph in 1954. He is the last living pioneer of modern dance and ranks with the legendary Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham as a principal founder of this American art form. The Company performs Mr. Taylor’s ever-growing collection of dances, which now numbers 140, around the country and throughout the world.

GFF: How did you get involved with the PTDC fundraiser for the Celiac Disease Center at
AO: In 2004 I asked a friend about creating a fundraiser to benefit the Celiac Disease Center, and Cynthia Beckman at the Center was eager to work with us. Luckily, Dr. Green is a huge fan of dance.

GFF: How many years have you been organizing this fundraiser?
AO: This year marks our ninth effort.

GFF: Why is this cause so important to you?
AO: I lived for 50 years with Celiac – eating gluten – before I discovered that contrary to what my parents were told when I was a newborn, one does not outgrow Celiac at six. I want to support the CDC’s efforts to identify those with Celiac so they don’t suffer needlessly as I did.

GFF: What is your favorite part about this Celiac Disease Center fundraiser?
AO: I love the cooperation we get from people like Edena at Pala Pizza, and Ceil and George at Foods by George. And of course the Celiac Meetup has been incredibly helpful in spreading the word of the event and building an audience for it.

GFF: How have things changed since you started organizing?
AO: After the one year when we ran out of pizza in five minutes, we now ration the slices so everyone gets some!

GFF: How can people buy tickets?
AO: Folks just call me at 646.214.5821 with a credit card; I seat the Meetup group together. For more expensive tickets, one calls the box office at 212.496.0600.

GFF: What is included in the ticket price?
AO: Whether the tickets are bought through Meetup or through the box office, the prices include a donation to the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia, admission to the pre-performance light supper including pizza from Pala and dessert from Foods by George, and of course a performance by the Paul Taylor Dance Company at Lincoln Center. I always choose a program that I think the group would especially like, and this year includes a comedy, a very alluring work and Mr. Taylor’s signature dance, Esplanade.

Since its inception in 1990, Celiac Disease Foundation has been at the forefront of celiac disease education, information, awareness, advocacy and support services. Charting a territory not ventured by any other official celiac disease organization, CDF was instrumental in bringing attention to the disease at a time when the word celiac, much less knowledge about it, was far from most people's consciousness. In the two decades since opening its doors, CDF stands as the "go to" resource organization for anything and everything celiac.
CDF Team gluten-free™ is a fundraising program that provides a simple way for athletes and non-athletes alike to raise awareness and funds for celiac disease and non-celiac disease gluten sensitivity. Fundraising efforts may include any event from marathons to triathlons, or even bar mitzvahs, wedding favors and virtual fundraisers! The money raised by CDF Team gluten-free™ participants goes directly towards summer camp scholarships for children on the gluten-free diet as well as celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity research, support and awareness programs. CDF Team gluten-free™ is the fundraising arm of Celiac Disease Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, public benefit corporation. Visit the website for more information.

Please remember, if you would like a t-shirt you must make your $25 donation through this Meetup event page by RSVPing YES. Once you have made this $25 donation, I will contact you for your mailing address and t-shirt size.
Any donation helps CDF Team gluten-free™ and Celiac Disease Foundation.
Thank you in advance!

The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on educating people affected by celiac disease and promoting celiac disease awareness to the public at large. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation also offers a scholarship program to college students affected with celiac disease. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation also works to raise funds for Celiac Disease centers through a variety of meaningful charity events and sponsorship opportunities. Promoting an active lifestyle and including physical activities in its fundraisers and events is at the core of the Foundation’s primary goal, which is to demonstrate the potential for celiac sufferers to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle while confronting the effects of celiac disease. www.kicking4celiac.org

Celiac Disease Scholarship Program - The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation offers a one of a kind national scholarship opportunity that helps students off-set the costs of gluten-free living when entering college. This one time scholarship award helps students subsidize their meal costs that are dictated by living with Celiac Disease. These scholarships are awarded to students graduating high school and entering into a four-year undergraduate college program, and are doing so with Celiac Disease. As the daily struggles of living with Celiac Disease can be debilitating, each student applying is one that exemplifies perseverance, hard work, and dedication, all traits the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation prides itself on. Other criteria must be met during the application process, but we want to reward those that live with Celiac Disease and continually open new doors for themselves through their hard work!

Cleats 4 Kids Program - The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation’s “Cleats 4 Kids” program collects sports cleats for both boys and girls and donates them to recreation centers and organizations in need, throughout the country. Currently in it’s early stages, we have partnered this program with various organizations in underserved areas of New York and Los Angeles. This program was developed to give children in underprivileged areas the opportunity to play sports without the concern of being able to afford proper footwear. The Foundation collects cleats, new and used, not torn, and packs and ships them out to these areas. The purpose of this is to keep these children active, and to help them continue to live an enjoyable, happy, and healthy lifestyle. Exercise, as well as proper nutrition and education is important, and the foundation helps to strengthen that ideal within the recipients of these donations.

Gluten-Free Summer Campership Fundraising Extravaganza
I got this email from my friend Josh, of GFreek.com, last week. When I read that he was trying to raise money for gluten-free campers I jumped at the opportunity to share this information. Please read on to learn about Josh's partnership with Team Gluten-Free for the Campership Fundraising Extravaganza!

Who: The Celiac Disease Foundation is a non-profit, public benefit corporation dedicated to providing services and support regarding Celiac Disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis, through programs of awareness, education, advocacy and research.

Team Gluten-Free is a fundraising program that provides a simple way for runners, walkers, cyclists and triathletes to raise awareness and funds for celiac disease. The money raised by Team Gluten-Free™ participants goes directly towards summer camp scholarships for children on the gluten-free diet as well as celiac disease research, support and awareness programs. Team Gluten-Free™ is a fundraising arm of the Celiac Disease Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, public benefit corporation dedicated to the education of patients, families and health care professionals.

GFreek.com connects the gluten-free community with the best gluten-free products, services and organizations through the Annual Gluten-Free Awards and their Podcast  The G-Freek Show.

What: To raise awareness and money;  Josh Schieffer from Gfreek.com will be participating in three races for Team Gluten-Free this fall.  October 20th is the Beach to Battleship Ironman distance Triathlon; A 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full 26.2 mile marathon.  On November 4th,  four other runners and Josh will run the New York City Marathon.  And finally the following weekend, November 11th  Josh will run the Charlotte Marathon.

To help raise funds, some of the best gluten free companies are providing rewards for  financial donors.  Rewards will start at $10.00 donations and climb all the way to $1,000.00.  The rewards will vary from time to time as companies adjust and add products.  Stay up to date with the current rewards at http://www.gfreek.com/Charity_Running.html

Why:A child on the gluten-free diet may have difficulty at a mainstream camp, but shouldn't miss out on the experience. There are several camps across the country that offer celiac children everything from boating, canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, low and high ropes challenge courses, adventure programming, field events and team work. Most importantly, all meals are gluten-free, including campfire treats and barbecues. Team Gluten-Free™ is proud to provide camp scholarships or “camperships” to celiac children each summer.

Children all over the country will have an opportunity to create lifelong memories because you took the time to make a difference in their lives.
