Summer Food Fete 2013
Last night I was lucky enough to attend Food Fete Summer 2013 as a member of the press. This is a very well-curated event in New York City each year. This year's event had a lot of very interesting gluten-free products, many which were new to me. I love meeting the people behind the companies and asking them questions about ingredients, production processes, and their gluten-free customers. It is amazing to me how in just a few short years, gluten-free has really come into the limelight.

Here are some top discoveries from last night's event:

I also got to meet Lisa Lillien, aka Hungry Girl, and Missy Lapine Chase, author of the Sneaky Chef cookbooks and blog. I also munched on some delicious watermelon with goat cheese, grilled lamb, and spicy watermelon gazpacho. It was a fun night and a great event put on by Jeff at Food Fete.

I plan on posting more product reviews based on my discoveries at Food Fete in upcoming weeks. In the meantime, check out my slide show.

Jonty Jacobs: Gluten-Free Beef Products (But Don't Call It Jerky!)
Every season, I look forward to the NYC Food Fete events coordinated by Jeff Davis. Jeff works tirelessly to find the most interesting products on the market and brings together the best and brightest food, health, and fitness media in New York City. I am always honored to be a part of this event.

At each Food Fete, there are more and more vendors showcasing gluten-free products. For those who do not sell gluten-free food, they certainly have more awareness than ever before. I am always on the look out for interesting food at Food Fete and when I found Jonty Jacobs I feel like I found something special.

Jonty Jacobs create really interesting and delicious dried beef products based on traditional South African drying process. The two main products from Jonty Jacobs are Biltong (dried beef slices) and Droewors (dried beef sausage), both traditional beef delicacies which originated in South Africa.

According to their website, "Jonty Jacobs was founded by Monique Daniels, a South African raised in Australia who relocated to New York in 2010. As a meat enthusiast who was raised on delicious, natural biltong made by a family friend in Sydney, Monique was disappointed with the quality and taste of cured beef products made in the US. While having dinner with her sister and husband one night, the crazy idea came to her that she should create her own Biltong brand which would bring the best tasting, natural, chemical and preservative free Biltong to the US market."

I tend to shy away from regular beef jerky because it is full of preservatives, chemicals, and additives. Jonty Jacobs Biltong and Droewors DO NOT contain chemicals and additives and are not cured using sodium nitrate. In addition, the products are gluten-free, have no MSG, and no chemicals. I am always on the hunt for high-protein snacks and these hit the jackpot. At 14g and 16g grams a serving, these are the perfect punch of protein and flavor.

So the taste??? WHOA.

The Droewors are delicious. I came home from Food Fete with one bag and had to ration them out to myself at only one per day. Not an easy task when you are eating something this good. I had a friend try these and he quickly dipped his hand in for seconds. I smacked his hand and snatched the bag away quickly. I wanted to savor and save the remaining Droewors and tucked them back into the fridge. Dipped in the Jonty Jacobs spice blend, and you have yourself a nutritious and extremely flavorful treat.

Beef Biltong (Dried Beef) Traditional Original Ingredients: Beef, Salt, Brown Sugar, Vinegar, and Spice Blend

All Natural Droewors (Dried Beef Sausage) Ingredients: Beef, Vinegar, Salt, Brown Sugar, Natural Flavorings, Lamb Casings

Right now, Brooklyn-based Jonty Jacobs is making its way around local New York City artisan markets such as Hester Street Fair but you can also buy their products online to have them shipped directly to your door. Prices start at $7.99 for a 2 ounce bag and $9.99 for the spice blend. Shop now at JontyJacobs.com!

2014 Winter Food Fete Gluten-Free Finds in Photos
Last week was the Winter 2014 Food Fete event in NYC. This is an exclusive media-only event that helps launch new products to the marketplace. I love going to these events year after year to see all of the cool gluten-free products coming soon. I reconnected with old friends from Rudi's Gluten-Free and Honest Tea at this event and also met some new exciting companies. I was most excited to see Burpee Seeds and Plants at this year's event. Fruits and vegetables are naturally gluten-free and the produce at their booth looked amazing. The one thing I lack living in an NYC apartment is a garden but if I had one, I would plant the sample seeds Burpee sent me home with on Tuesday night. I am going to send these to my gardening celiac sister to put to good use.

Below is a photo montage of the products I was most excited about at this year's Food Fete.

Applegate Naturals Uncured Turkey Pepperoni

Yoplait Frozen Yogurt Bars (Two new flavors are gluten-free)

Fruits and veggies are a great source of naturally gluten-free food.
Produce and seeds by Burpee

Got to see my friends from Honest Tea launching their new lemonade

My old friends from Rudi's Gluten-free are launching a gluten-free double fiber bread

Daiya Cream Cheese Style Spreads
When I was at Food Fete earlier this month, I was introduced to the new Daiya Cream Cheese Style Spreads. These spreads come in three smooth & creamy flavors: Plain, Chive & Onion, and Strawberry. All Daiya products are free of dairy, soy and gluten – three of the most common allergens, and also have 0mg of cholesterol. This makes Daiya a GREAT option for gluten-free and dairy-free people. I tried the chive & onion Daiya spread at Food Fete on a gluten-free cracker and I was pleased. It had the consistency of a whipped cream cheese and a nice flavor.

I also got to try Daiya "cheese"cake at the event. I am excited to share this recipe with you readers today! With a homemade or store-bought gluten-free crust, this dairy-free and gluten-free cheesecake is perfect for your next party!

Daiya No-Bake Cheesecake

Ingredients:
Prepared gluten-free crust of your choice (either store-bought or homemade)
3/4 cup coconut butter (a.k.a coconut manna)*
4 tbsp. water
3 tbsp. lemon juice
3 tbsp. natural vanilla extract Make sure this is gluten-free!
2/3 cup sugar
2 containers Daiya Plain Cream Cheese Style Spread
4 tbsp. coconut oil

*Note: Coconut butter, also known as coconut manna, can be found in many grocery stores in the nut butter aisle. It is not the same thing as coconut oil.

Instructions:
This makes a 10inch cheesecake in a spring form pan.

1) In a blender or food processor, add the coconut butter, water, lemon juice, vanilla, and sugar. Blend until completely smooth (about 2 min.)
2) With an electric beater, whip the Daiya Plain Cream Cheese Style Spread until smooth. Add the smooth coconut butter paste and beat until fully incorporated.
3) Melt the coconut oil and pour into the cream cheese mixture. Beat until fully combined.
4) Spread onto prepared crust and let sit covered in the fridge for at least 3 hours.

Optional: Top the cheesecake with fresh berries, chocolate, or any other topping you desire!

Food Fete Roundup
I first learned about Food Fête a few months ago via Twitter. Soon, I was digging around on the Food Fête website and learned "Food Fête is all about helping food, beverage and kitchenware companies connect face-to-face with top food writers and bloggers." I love meeting new vendors and people in the gluten-free community so these events sounded perfect for me. After contacting Jeff Davis, the organizer of Food Fete, he suggested I sign up for the Food Fête focusing on products for people with allergies. Perfect! This was definitely my type of event and I had the honor of attending this event last night.

I knew it was an exclusive event based on the website summary, but I wasn't sure what to expect. When I was pleasantly greeted by Jeff at the door and then handed the list of attendees, I knew this was going to be an exciting evening. I immediately saw familiar faces which is always comforting. Sloane Miller, the Allergic Girl, was the first person I stopped by to say hello to when I walked in. Just last week, I realized I got a mention from Sloane in the acknowledgements section of her new book so I had to give her a huge thank-you hug in person. She had a lovely display of Allergic Girl and was also giving out allergen-free lollipops. Too cute! I continued walking around saying hello to friends such as Bruce and Pedro from Everybody Eats, Amie Valpone from The Healthy Apple, and Rachel Begun, RD who was showcasing Enjoy Life Foods with Joel Warady, CMO of the company. I also stopped by to see my favorite gluten-free bread friends at the Rudi's Gluten-Free Bakery table. Also manning the table was the always animated Dan from Renegade Kitchen.

Other vendors included General Mills, Chobani, Green Valley Organics, Pacific Natural Foods, Cockspur Rum, Home Free, Pasta Prima, Lucini Italia, Redwood Hill Farm, and Mary's Gone Crackers. You can see full profiles on each of these companies at www.foodfetepress.wordpress.com.

There were some exciting announcements and new products at last night's event. Here are the highlights:
  • General Mills has just relaunched their Live Gluten Freely site as GlutenFreely.com. They are now endorsed by the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research and The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. In addition, they have partnered with other gluten-free food companies to open an online store on their new website.
  • Enjoy Life Foods is launching three new products next week at Expo West including Chocolate Granola, Crunchy Cookies, and Mega Chunks which are large chocolate nibs to be used in cooking and baking. I also learned that Enjoy Life Foods is also adding celery to the list of their allergens that are not included in their products. Apparently, celery is an allergen that is being added to the "NO" list throughout the UK so Enjoy Life is being proactive and not including it in any products.
  • Pasta Prima hands-down has the most delicious gluten-free ravoli that I ever ate. Right now they are available at Costco on the West Coast, but they are hopeful to expand their product line throughout the United States soon.
  • Rudi's Gluten-Free Bakery has just launched gluten-free hamburger and hot dog buns. I had a portobello mushroom "burger" on a new Rudi's gluten-free hamburger bun but ate it too quickly and didn't get a photo. So delicious!!! Rudi's will also hopefully launch some new gluten-free products this fall which sound very exciting. Stay tuned Rudi's fans!
  • Green Valley Organic had lactose-free yogurt and sour cream. At their table, I learned that adding lactase to dairy products helps digest lactose therefore making their products lactose-free. This is great news for those who cannot tolerate lactose. I also loved the Green Valley Organic tag line which is "Peace. Love. Dairy".
  • I have been a big fan of Mary's Gone Crackers since I met Mary and Dale in 2008. Last night, I tried their N'Oatmeal cookies for the first time and I was not disappointed. These cookies have an oatmeal cookie taste (from what I can assume, since I don't eat oats) but have no oats in the ingredients. Mary Anne, the Mary's Gone Crackers representative, was clearly passionate about her role at Mary's company and was fun to talk to during the event.
  • My favorite sample of the night came from Lucini Italia. This was a "new to me" company and I am glad I met this company. Lucini Italia introduced the new Cinque a Cinque chickpea frittata mix which was amazing. The only ingredient is chickpea flour. I cannot wait to use this mix ASAP.

Thank you Jeff and his Food Fête staff for including me in such an exciting event.

Pleased to Tweet You: Gluten-Free Fun
Last week, I was honored to be featured in the NFCA's Celiac Central March Newsletter. They have a relatively new featured called "Pleased to Tweet You" which features a prominent gluten-free "Tweeter". For those of you unfamiliar with the social networking site Twitter, a "Tweeter" is someone that posts regularly on the website via "tweets" which are brief 140-character conversations.

I was very late to the Twitter game and only joined at the end of September 2010 after being convinced by Dan of Renegade Kitchen and Jill of Glow Gluten-Free that this was THE tool to use on the Internet. They were 100% correct. In only one month of using Twitter, my blog readership jumped by more than 50% and my Facebook fan page nearly doubled in size. Clearly I had a been missing out on an entire gluten-free audience that I never knew about before joining Twitter.

Since September, I have connected with some really amazing gluten-free people and companies. I even attended the awesome Food Fete event last week that I had no clue about before reading a post on Twitter. For those of you bloggers or readers not on Twitter, I suggest you join today. I was afraid to get sucked into another social media website, but this is really an amazing and powerful tool. There are lots of symbols and abbreviations like @, #, and #FF that take some time getting used to, but you will quickly get the hang of it. Hopefully you will realize, like I did, that there is a wealth of information that can be expressed in 140 characters or less.

Here is my "Pleased to Tweet You" interview that I did with Cheryl of the NFCA last week. You can also find it on the NFCA's Celiac Central March Newsletter page.

Gluten-Free Fun on Twitter

Pleased to Tweet You

Each month, "Pleased to Tweet You" will highlight an individual who chatted with @CeliacAwareness on Twitter. If you’d like to be featured, follow @CeliacAwareness and say hello!

Name: Erin Smith

Find her on Twitter: @gfreefun

Tweeting since: September 2010

1. How long have you been gluten-free?
I was diagnosed with celiac disease as a toddler in 1981 so I am celebrating 30 years of being gluten-free this year!! I like to think of myself as a Celiac Disease veteran.

2. What do you like to tweet about (events, recipes, news articles, etc.)?
Every morning, I tweet about my daily blog postings on Gluten-Free Fun (which has been around since January 2007). Throughout the day, I tweet about interesting gluten-free articles and blogs I read, gluten-free events, and also general tweets to friends I have made on Twitter. As the lead organizer of the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group, I also tweet about all of our upcoming events.

3. Why do you follow NFCA (@CeliacAwareness)?
Besides thinking the staff of NFCA are all awesome, I think the materials that the NFCA provides free-of-charge on their website are really outstanding and thorough. Whenever @CeliacAwarness posts a new tweet, I go directly to the website to learn more. I can spend hours on the NFCA website looking at the both educational and entertaining materials including gluten-free tax tips, fun videos like “Sex and the Celiac,” recent celiac disease news items, and upcoming events.

4. What's your favorite gluten-free dish?
I have so many gluten-free favorites, so this is a tough question. I love to cook but lately two of my favorites are Gluten-Free Bisquick Bacon Pie and homemade gluten-free lasagna. When I go out to eat in NYC, I love the Nutella galette at Bar Breton, the socca at Nizza NYC, and the nachos at Heartland Brewery Midtown West.

5. What's one thing you can do now that you couldn't do before going gluten-free?
Since I was diagnosed with celiac disease at such a young age, I don’t know anything else other than being gluten-free. Over the past few years, I have accepted my disease more than ever before and I am much more open to actually talking about having celiac disease. I used to be embarrassed and not want other people to know why I was avoiding eating in social settings, why I had different bread, etc. In the past 5 or 6 years, I have fully embraced my gluten-free lifestyle so I spend more time being an advocate for celiac disease rather than being embarrassed and hiding who I am.

6. In 140 characters or less, why should others join the gluten-free community on Twitter?
The gf community on Twitter is knowledgeable, passionate, and a great support system. I love "meeting" new people every day!

* Erin’s blog, Gluten-Free Fun, is in the running for Women’s Health "Blogs We Love" 2011. Learn how you can help her get noticed and spread the gluten-free message.

TCBY's Super Fro-Yo is Here and Free for Moms on Mother's Day!
Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Tim Casey, the CEO of TCBY, at Food Fete in New York City. It is not every day you meet the CEO of a major company and it is especially surprising when you learn this particular CEO has Celiac Disease and has been gluten-free for 10 years. I was excited to talk to Mr. Casey and his chief food scientist on staff, Dr. Wayne Geilman, all about their new line of Super Fro-Yo at TCBY. I grew up eating TCBY's white chocolate mousse at a local store on Long Island, so it was great to chat with Mr. Casey and Dr. Geilman while I tried their all new Super Fro-Yo white chocolate mousse. (Delicious!) TCBY's new Super Fro-Yo is a really great option to satisfy your sweet tooth. All of their soft serve flavors are not made with gluten containing ingredients.

It looks like big things are in store for TCBY with their Super Fro-Yo as they try to "redefine the healthy nature of the frozen yogurt industry". Read on for more information...

Special Note:  For the fourth year in a row, TCBY will offer free frozen yogurt to moms on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. Moms will have the choice of their favorite flavors such as popular White Chocolate Mousse, Strawberry or limited time offer Watermelon Sorbet served in a cup or cone.

TCBY ANNOUNCES ALL NEW FROZEN YOGURT CLASSIFICATION:
“SUPER FRO-YO” – THE HEALTHIEST IN THE MARKET
Families, Seniors, Active Lifestylers, Fitness Enthusiasts, and Athletes Can Finally Have Their Just Desserts Without the Guilt
SALT LAKE CITY (May 3, 2011) – Dieting, eating right, going organic, exercising... all continue to weigh heavy on the American way of life, coupled with the ongoing guilt associated with our love of dessert.  TCBY, The Country’s Best Yogurt, says you can not only lose the guilt but potentially gain some meaningful health benefits by choosing its “Super Fro-Yo” frozen dessert, a new classification of frozen yogurt that distinguishes between the industry’s baseline nutritionals and TCBY’s “super” elevated nutritional levels that will redefine the healthy nature of the frozen yogurt industry.
Super Fro-Yo, TCBY’s frozen yogurt packed with Vitamins A & D, probiotics, dietary fiber, protein, calcium and so much more, is a great tasting, healthy alternative to treats high in saturated fat and empty calories.  Although there are many forms of beneficial yogurt in the market today, TCBY’s Super Fro-Yo sets a new standard for healthy nutritionals.  To qualify as Super Fro-Yo, frozen yogurt nutritionals must meet the following guidelines per serving:
  • Must have a minimum of three grams of Fiber
  • Must have a minimum of four grams of Protein
  • Must have a minimum of seven types of Probiotics
  • Must meet a minimum of 20% DV of Vitamin D
  • Must meet a minimum of 20% DV of Calcium
In addition to the above nutritionals, TCBY’s Super Fro-Yo also contains 120 calories or less, a minimum of 10% DV of Vitamin A, one gram or less of saturated fat and a minimum of 20 billion live and active cultures per serving at manufacturing.
“We are in the business of selling indulgence to the American consumer,” states Timothy Casey, CEO of TCBY.  “However, we believe it can be done in a legitimately healthy way without compromising taste and that sense of indulgent satisfaction.  The ‘Super Fro-Yo’ classification is important to us for two reasons:  One, not all frozen yogurt is created equal and we want consumers to be clearly educated and informed as to why TCBY is better, and;  Two, as we place our ‘Super Fro-Yo’ nutritionals up against ice cream and other frozen yogurts, we are confident our customers will feel a great deal better about enjoying TCBY products.”

With a research and development yogurt division headed by noted food scientist Dr. Wayne Geilman, TCBY has worked diligently over the years to set a higher standard for frozen yogurt in America.  Many brands within the category have attempted to follow TCBY’s product innovation, which has been positive for the overall category.  However, continuous advances in formulating TCBY products have made it possible for Dr. Geilman and his team to go beyond a product that is simply healthier than ice cream, which is where the category had been historically.   With Super Fro-Yo, TCBY has a product that packs a punch of probiotics, vitamins, fiber, protein and cultures not found at such high levels in most other frozen yogurts available today.

As a leading innovator in the frozen yogurt category for the past 30 years, TCBY invests in the latest technologies to deliver a healthy indulgence with what the company calls a “Bundled Health Enhancement System.”  The TCBY Bundled Health Enhancement System uses balanced combinations of nutrients that work together in a synergistic manner to improve the overall sense of well being.  In developing this proprietary system, TCBY focused on supporting certain health benefits that include: digestive health, weight management, bone health and the aging process, without sacrificing great taste.

“We recognize that the fro-yo category as a whole is doing a better job of including live active cultures or probiotics in their products, distancing itself from the pure indulgence of the ice cream category.  However, the degree to which TCBY have formulated our products is so far and away different today that we felt it warranted a separate classification,” explains Dr. Wayne Geilman.  “We are purposefully transparent about the requirements for ‘Super Fro-Yo’ because in addition to providing a great tasting product full of ‘Super’ nutritionals, we are trying to educate the population about the importance of dietary fiber, calcium and probiotics.  The research tells us that the average consumer knows at some level that live probiotic cultures, for example, are good for you, but they don’t understand how good and why.  ‘Super Fro-Yo’ is a great platform to educate the marketplace and hopefully change behavior.”

TCBY “Super Fro-Yo” flavors available at participating locations include:
  • No Sugar Added (NSA) Vanilla, Chocolate and White Chocolate Macadamia, as well as NSA and fat free, Strawberry, Peach and Mountain Blackberry
  • Traditional flavors include Golden Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Old Fashioned Vanilla, Fat Free Dutch Chocolate, White Chocolate Mousse, Cheesecake and Cake Batter

About TCBY

Based in Salt Lake City, TCBY, The Country’s Best Yogurt has been a frozen yogurt innovator from the day its first shop opened in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1981.  Ever since, the great-tasting, low-fat frozen yogurt concept has received an enthusiastic response from an increasingly health-conscious public. With more than 600 locations both in the United States and internationally, TCBY - Best Tasting, Best For You™ has long been a healthier alternative for consumers looking for a treat or snack.  To learn more check out www.TCBY.com.

California Salted Butter Milkshake Shooters
When I was at Food Fete in July, I stopped by the California Milk Advisory Board's gorgeous table. Luckily, I do not have a problem with dairy so I was happy to taste some of their amazing recipes. One of my favorite samples of the entire night was the Salted Butter Milkshake Shooter. The recipe is simple and the flavor is delicious. This would be a great beverage to server either with appetizers or as a really rich shake. This is a perfect summertime treat. Enjoy!

Salted Butter Milkshake Shooter
Prep time: 15 minutes

1/4 cup Real California butter
1/4 cup caramel sauce
4 cups Real California vanilla ice cream, softened

Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. When butter begins to foam, swirl skillet several times. Cook and swirl until butter starts to brown; remove from heat. Let cool slightly, then whisk in caramel sauce. Slowly whisk in butter mixture. Serve as shooters in shot glasses or as shakes in large glasses.

Makes about 3 to 3 1/2 cups.

Enjoy Life Allergen-Free Granola
Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to get a package with the new Enjoy Life Double Chocolate Crunch nut and gluten-free granola inside. I first learned about this product from CMO Joel Warady at the gluten-free Food Fete event back in March right before they launched this new product at Expo West.

When I hear the word "granola", I usually just ignore it because I assume that it has gluten or oats which I always avoid. Not this granola. The Enjoy Life Double Chocolate Crunch is wheat-free, tree nut-free, fish-free, dairy-free, shellfish-free, egg-free, peanut-free, soy-free and obviously gluten-free. It is also made without casein, potato, sesame, and sulfites. Just because it is free of all of these allergens doesn't mean it is flavor free. It is actually quite the opposite since it is made with the EnjoyLlife semi-sweet chocolate mini-chips. It is chocolatey and crunchy goodness in a bag. I actually had to put the bag away because I knew I would sit at my desk at work snacking away all morning if I didn't. I think this would be a good add-in to some plain yogurt or enjoyed with a glass of milk, for those of us that are not lactose-free!

Ingredients:
Brown Rice Flakes,Chocolate Chips (Evaporated Cane Juice, Chocolate Liquor, Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter), Evaporated Cane Juice, Brown Rice Syrup, Water, Rice Bran, Rice Crisps (Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Raisin Juice Concentrate, Honey, Salt), Natural Process Cocoa Powder, Inulin (Chicory Root Fiber), Ground Flaxseed, Natural Chocolate Flavor, Honey,Vanilla, Expeller-Pressed Vegetable Oil (Safflower Oil and/or Sunflower Oil), Salt, Rosemary Extract

NO TRANS FAT, NO ARTIFICIAL INGREDIENTS, VEGAN, KOSHER PAREVE, GLUTEN-FREE, CASEIN-FREE

I've had Kettle Brand chips before, but I was excited to learn about their new reduced fat chip at Food Fete earlier this summer. I love potato chips; their crunch, their saltiness, their (usually) gluten-freeness! I try to buy unsalted chips or low-fat, but sometimes low-fat usually means low-flavor. This is not the case with the new Kettle Brand reduced fat line. These are some crunchy and flavorful chips! They are also gluten-free which makes them the perfect go-to snack for us on the gluten-free diet. I opened the Sea Salt &  Vinegar Krinkle Cut immediately. The first thing I realized was that these were the first krinkle cut kettle chips I ever ate. Somehow I think the krinkle adds to the signature kettle crunch which is fine by me. The second thing I realized is that I didn't get that overpowering weird feeling in my jaw from the vinegar flavoring. There was just enough flavor to make these good but not too much vinegar. I would definitely buy these chips, especially if I saw the smaller bags at the deli or local bodega. All of the new reduced fat kettle chips are gluten-free so pick some up today!

Here is some more information from the company:

These surprisingly indulgent potato chips are made with all natural ingredients, sunflower and safflower oils, and have only 130 calories per serving. But don’t fret – these chips have all the flavor and crunch you expect from Kettle Brand with 40% less fat. The new line is launching with the following flavors:
  • Sea Salt (on store shelves now)
  • Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper (in stores in August)
  • Sea Salt & Vinegar Krinkle Cut (in stores in August)
Like all Kettle Brand® snacks, the new Reduced Fat potato chips are made with only the best, all natural ingredients – no trans fats, no artificial colors or flavors, no preservatives.

KETTLE BRAND® LAUNCHES ALL NATURAL REDUCED FAT POTATO CHIP LINE

SALEM, Ore. – Kettle Brand, a pioneer in the batch-cooked, all natural potato chip category, is bringing its most popular flavors to a new reduced fat potato chip that delivers signature bold flavor and hearty crunch, with 40 percent less fat. Surprisingly indulgent at only 130 calories per serving, the new line extends the brand’s unwavering commitment to innovation and natural ingredients to one of the fastest growing snack categories.

The first flavor in the Reduced Fat line-up, original Sea Salt, is already making its way onto store shelves. Sea Salt & Vinegar and Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper, two of the brand’s most popular flavors, will be added later this summer. Sea Salt & Vinegar Reduced Fat will debut on a Krinkle Cut™, answering consumer requests to pair the robust flavor with a hearty, ridge-style chip. It will be the only all natural, reduced fat, thick ridge-style chip on the market. Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper, already a best seller on a Krinkle Cut™ chip, will be offered for the first time as a reduced fat option in the traditional style chip.

“We may have reduced the fat, but the flavor is as indulgent as ever,” said Julie Dunmire, Kettle Brand Marketing Director. “We’re excited to offer consumers a choice of chip styles in traditional flavor favorites. Now when someone is seeking a healthier snacking choice, they can experience the same crunch, texture and great tasting, all natural flavor they crave. You truly cannot tell they are reduced fat without looking at the bag.”

Like all Kettle Brand snacks, the reduced fat potato chips are made with the finest, all natural, non-GMO ingredients – no trans fat, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors, and no MSG. Only the same all natural sunflower and safflower oils found in the original line are used in making Kettle Brand Reduced Fat potato chips. However, a proprietary cooking technique results in chips which provide a satisfying crunch and flavor, while delivering a lower fat profile. By offering its most popular signature flavors in three different lines, Original, Baked and now Reduced Fat, Kettle Brand provides retailers and consumers with their favorite varieties of potato chips cooked their way.

“The tang of the vinegar, the spice of the pepper and the crunch of the potato are there in full force,” said Carolyn Richards, Kettle Brand Chief Flavor Architect. “We worked hard to ensure the experience of our new Reduced Fat potato chip line lives up to the Kettle Brand standard.”

Kettle Brand® Reduced Fat Sea Salt potato chips are available in 8-oz. bags nationwide with a SRP of $3.49. Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper and Sea Salt & Vinegar Krinkle Cut™ flavors will arrive on store shelves in August.
