The First Annual Mid-Hudson Walk for Celiac Disease

I am really excited to participate in the 1st Mid-Hudson Walk for Celiac Disease on May 19th. This part of the Hudson Valley holds a special place in my heart since I am a Marist College alumni and I spent four wonderful years in this area. Details about my participation are still being decided by the planning committee but it looks like I might be at a table for gluten-free bloggers. I will keep you posted. More than 2 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease, a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients in food.  People who have Celiac Disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley.

All proceeds from the Walk for Celiac Disease will benefit the Celiac Disease Foundation, Hudson Valley Chapter and the ongoing research programs of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.  This Walk will help educate the greater Mid-Hudson Valley Community about this disease and will, hopefully, make those with Celiac more aware of the education, support and other resources available to them in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Through diagnosis and dietary education, the Digestive Disease Center of the Hudson Valley dedicates itself to helping people with Celiac feel better and to improving their digestive health and quality of life.

To this end, the Digestive Disease Center has created the Digestive Disease Center Community Fund in an effort to diagnose individuals, to educate patients and clinicians, to advocate for patients and to promote gastrointestinal health in the Mid-Hudson Valley Community.

SEVENTH ANNUAL EVENING WITH THE PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY

TO BENEFIT CELIAC DISEASE CENTER AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

New York, NY, March 6, 2012 – The New York City Celiac Meetup Group will host the seventh annual Evening with the Paul Taylor Dance Company to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. The 7pm performance, featuring three masterworks by Paul Taylor – Oh, You Kid!, Beloved Renegade and Brandenburgs – will be preceded by a gluten-free light supper, provided by the Center, for special ticket-holders from 5:45 to 6:45pm in the theater’s Promenade.

“The Celiac Meetup Group is happy to host this fabulous event again after last year’s tremendous success,” said Meetup Group leader Erin Smith. “We’re providing our community with a great evening of dance while benefitting the important work of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.” Ms. Smith said that last year’s event drew more than 125 people with celiac disease.

“We are thrilled that the Paul Taylor Dance Company teams with the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University,” said Peter Green, MD, Director of the Center. “The matchless artistry of Mr. Taylor and his dancers is truly inspiring.” Cynthia Beckman of the Center added, “We’re grateful to the Taylor Company not only for helping to raise awareness about celiac disease but for the funds they help raise as well.”

Grandma Rose's Bake Shoppe is donating cupcakes for the dessert portion of the pre-performance reception. 

The series of performances, begun in 2004, was created by Alan Olshan, the Taylor Company’s Director of Marketing and Communications, who has celiac disease.

Oh, You Kid! contains a Coney Island-style revue of vaudeville numbers and a melodrama featuring a damsel in distress. Beloved Renegade depicts the experiences of an artist – “poet of the body and the soul” – described in Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.” The New York Times called it “the best new choreography of 2008” and hailed Mr. Taylor as “among the great war poets.” Brandenburgs is one of Mr. Taylor’s magnificent collection of works set to music by a master of the baroque, and the dance’s exuberance matches the ferocious energy of Bach’s spirited concertos.

Tickets for the evening are $300, $135, $75 and $25. I am thrilled to be part of a wonderful fundraiser this March to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. Although I have attended this event for the past two years, this is the first time I am hands-on in the organization. As an organizer, I have helped secure some fantastic donations, spread the word on blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as meet the wonderful dancers of the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Last Friday, I was at the beautiful dance studios on the Lower East Side of Manhattan taking pictures and enjoying a rehearsal. We would like to invite you to participate in a Celiac Disease research study that will include completing two questionnaires. The purpose of this is to understand what it feels like to live with celiac disease. The overall goal is to use your responses to test a questionnaire designed specifically for children with Celiac Disease. We would greatly appreciate your participation.

You do not have to participate in order to receive care. There is no harm to
completing the questionnaires. The benefit of participating is that you will assist in the testing of a questionnaire which may improve the quality of life of children with Celiac Disease. You do not have to complete the questionnaires because participation is completely voluntary. Your name will not be included in the questionnaires.

KICKING 4 CELIAC

Craig Pinto has become a really active member of the New York and Long Island Celiac community over the past few months. Please read on for his latest endeavor...

"KICKING 4 CELIAC was born out of the desire to show children and adults alike, that living with Celiac Disease will not shut you down physically. On Sunday, October 10th, 2010, at Bethpage High School, arena football kicker, Craig Pinto, will be kicking field goals for 12 straight hours, from 730am-730pm, with two goals in mind. First, he will be attempting to set a world record for most field goals kicked within that time frame, by having to make 500 field goals, from 40 yards out, but Craig's main focus is to raise money and awareness for Celiac Disease.

"With something that has affected me for such a long time, and is so close to my heart, it only makes sense to utilize things I love - kicking and football - to raise money and awareness for my other passion," says Craig. "And that is spreading the word and educating people about Celiac Disease. Kicking footballs for this long seems physically challenging, but so is living with Celiac Disease everyday, and both can be done successfully."

All proceeds will benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, the only center in the United States that provides comprehensive medical care, including nutrition, for adult and pediatric patients with Celiac Disease.

We would like to invite you to participate in a research study that will include attending a focus group to learn issues related to living with celiac disease. The purpose of this is to learn what it feels like to live with celiac disease, not focusing on the symptoms or presentations. There will be separate groups for parents and for children. Each group will include a total of up to 10 persons and will be about 45 minutes in length. The sessions will be recorded for study purposes. The overall goal of the focus groups is to use your responses to develop a celiac disease quality of life questionnaire. We would greatly appreciate your participation.

You do not have to participate in the focus groups to receive care for your child. Participation is completely voluntary. We will keep the recordings of the sessions for as long as needed to complete the research. The recordings will not be used for any other reason.

A master candidate of Integrated Marketing at NYU is writing a marketing plan for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University as his graduation project.

The goal of the marketing plan is to help the Center raise fund to support research and improve service, build awareness of both the celiac disease and the organization, and educate the public.

The ultimate goal is to grow the organization.

This research is supposed to help him learn more about the celiac patients (including their families and friends) and their donation behaviors so that he is able to figure out ways to communicate with them.

Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University

Celiac Disease is an incurable autoimmune disorder characterized by intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. This intolerance damages the small intestine causing malabsorption of nutrients. In children, symptoms of the disease may include gastrointestinal problems, failure to thrive, tooth discoloration, short stature or developmental delays. In adults, untreated Celiac Disease may be associated with anemia, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis or infertility as well as Type 1 diabetes and certain cancers. The only known treatment for the disease is strict removal of gluten from the diet. The variety of symptoms combined with a general lack of awareness of the disease often leads to misdiagnosis or no diagnosis. Yet, celiac disease is actually relatively common. An estimated 3 million Americans have Celiac Disease (it is more prevalent than Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Multiple Sclerosis), yet 97% of cases are undiagnosed, leaving millions at risk.

Roundtable on Celiac Disease at Columbia U

Due to many requests, the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University has decided to host a Roundtable on Celiac Disease that deals with individuals and their families' difficulties in living with celiac disease. The program will be held monthly and would deal with children, adolescence and adult issues with respect to celiac disease.

Members of the Celiac Disease Center who will be attending the Roundtable on Celiac Disease include adult and pediatric gastroenterologists as well as our nutritionist. Columbia will conduct this program in an interactive format allowing airing of views and questions from all participants.

The first Roundtable on Celiac Disease will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the Atchley Loeb Conference Room located in the Columbia University Medical Center. Parents of young children with celiac disease are invited to attend.

While the issues that will be discussed will focus on the needs of the participants, we anticipate that discussions could involve difficulties with diagnosis, how should a celiac disease patient be followed medically, what dietetic nutritional issues are important, who should take vitamins, how to handle associated diseases and manifestations, how to control weight, what to tell teachers and guidance counselors about your child among other topics.

The Colin Leslie Walk for Celiac Disease: Sept. 14, 2008

Colin Leslie is an amazing 16-year-old that was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2005. After being diagnosed, Colin decided he would rather make a difference in the Celiac Community by educating and raising awareness than sit around keeping quiet about Celiac Disease. Colin and his walkers have raised over $113,000.

With support from both the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University and The Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group, Colin is planning this year's annual Colin Leslie Walk for Celiac Disease on September 14, 2008. This year's sponsors include:

A gluten free lunch, provided by Soul Dog, will also be available for purchase that day. Parking this year will be behind 411 Theodore Fremd Ave. in Rye.

Gluten Free Holiday Cooking Class

I got this press release in my mailbox today, so I figured I would pass on the information. I have been so busy lately, but I promise to publish some of my "draft" postings soon!

On Monday, December 3rd from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm, the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University will host a gluten-free cooking for the holidays class at Cooking by the Book, 13 Worth Street, New York City.

People are largely unaware of this autoimmune disorder characterized by intolerance to gluten, which is found in many common foods. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, and other grains and intolerance to it damages the small intestine, causing malabsorption of nutrients, which can lead to serious health consequences including Type 1 diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, infertility, depression and cancer.

At 6:30 pm, world-renowned celiac disease expert Dr. Peter Green will not only discuss the challenges in obtaining the correct diagnoses and guidelines for testing, but also offer up nutrition strategies for finding enjoyable food alternatives when shopping, cooking, and eating out. During the evening, participants will be treated to the following:

o Three-Course Gluten-Free Meal with Seasonal Wines
o Professional One-on-one Cooking Instruction
