The First Annual Mid-Hudson Walk for Celiac Disease
I am really excited to participate in the 1st Mid-Hudson Walk for Celiac Disease on May 19th. This part of the Hudson Valley holds a special place in my heart since I am a Marist College alumni and I spent four wonderful years in this area. Details about my participation are still being decided by the planning committee but it looks like I might be at a table for gluten-free bloggers. I will keep you posted. If you are in the area on May 19, please come to this fundraiser and say hello!

More than 2 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease, a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients in food.  People who have Celiac Disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley.
All proceeds from the Walk for Celiac Disease will benefit the Celiac Disease Foundation, Hudson Valley Chapter and the ongoing research programs of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.  This Walk will help educate the greater Mid-Hudson Valley Community about this disease and will, hopefully, make those with Celiac more aware of the education, support and other resources available to them in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Through diagnosis and dietary education, the Digestive Disease Center of the Hudson Valley dedicates itself to helping people with Celiac feel better and to improving their digestive health and quality of life.
To this end, the Digestive Disease Center has created the Digestive Disease Center Community Fund in an effort to diagnose individuals, to educate patients and clinicians, to advocate for patients and to promote gastrointestinal health in the Mid-Hudson Valley Community.

7th Annual Evening with the Paul Taylor Dance Company to Benefit Celiac Disease Center

SEVENTH ANNUAL EVENING WITH THE PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY
TO BENEFIT CELIAC DISEASE CENTER AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

New York, NY, March 6, 2012 – The New York City Celiac Meetup Group will host the seventh annual Evening with the Paul Taylor Dance Company to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. The 7pm performance, featuring three masterworks by Paul Taylor – Oh, You Kid!, Beloved Renegade and Brandenburgs – will be preceded by a gluten-free light supper, provided by the Center, for special ticket-holders from 5:45 to 6:45pm in the theater’s Promenade.

“The Celiac Meetup Group is happy to host this fabulous event again after last year’s tremendous success,” said Meetup Group leader Erin Smith. “We’re providing our community with a great evening of dance while benefitting the important work of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.” Ms. Smith said that last year’s event drew more than 125 people with celiac disease.

“We are thrilled that the Paul Taylor Dance Company teams with the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University,” said Peter Green, MD, Director of the Center. “The matchless artistry of Mr. Taylor and his dancers is truly inspiring.” Cynthia Beckman of the Center added, “We’re grateful to the Taylor Company not only for helping to raise awareness about celiac disease but for the funds they help raise as well.”

Grandma Rose's Bake Shoppe is donating cupcakes for the dessert portion of the pre-performance reception.

The series of performances, begun in 2004, was created by Alan Olshan, the Taylor Company’s Director of Marketing and Communications, who has celiac disease.

Oh, You Kid! contains a Coney Island-style revue of vaudeville numbers and a melodrama featuring a damsel in distress. Beloved Renegade depicts the experiences of an artist – “poet of the body and the soul” – described in Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.” The New York Times called it “the best new choreography of 2008” and hailed Mr. Taylor as “among the great war poets.” Brandenburgs is one of Mr. Taylor’s magnificent collection of works set to music by a master of the baroque, and the dance’s exuberance matches the ferocious energy of Bach’s spirited concertos.

Tickets for the evening are $300, $135, $75 and $25. A portion of each ticket benefits the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University when the buyer mentions promo code CELIAC at the box office (63rd Street and Columbus Avenue); when calling 212.496.0600; or online at www.ptdc.org/tickets. A facility fee of $2 applies to all tickets, and service charges apply to phone and web orders.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company’s 2012 season, its first at Lincoln Center, features 22 dances by Paul Taylor and runs from March 13 through April 1. The March 13 performance is sold out.

Has Consumer Perception of GF Food Safety Changed Over Time?
The Gluten Intolerance Group & The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center

GIG New Logo

The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center has partnered with the Gluten Intolerance Group on an exciting initiative to further their understanding of consumer perception of gluten free food safety. If you have 20 minutes to participate and have been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten intolerance/gluten sensitivity, please complete this food safety survey. They hope to gain valuable information from this study that will identify education and purchasing behaviors within the gluten-free community that would be useful in advancing gluten-free products and dining; and identify education, training, and communication needs between and within the consumers and food manufacturing and food service industries.

Jump Start Your Gluten-Free Diet!
Check out this free e-book from The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. I first read about it on Facebook. I plan on reading it while on vacation this week. This book is available on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iBooks and on your computer with iTunes.

Here's more about the book:

The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center is dedicated to raising awareness, increasing diagnosis rates and meeting the needs of people affected by celiac disease nationwide through education, research and advocacy.

Celiac disease, spelled Coeliac outside of North America, is an autoimmune disorder, which means the body “attacks itself”, rather than attacking a foreign substance as in an allergy. The medical treatment for celiac disease consists of strict adherence to a gluten-free diet.

With this guide you will understand the differences between celiac disease, intolerances and allergies. You will learn about the 300-plus signs and symptoms associated with celiac disease, genetic and antibody blood testing, diagnosis and required follow-up testing.

In this guide you will learn what gluten is, where gluten is found and how to avoid gluten. You will also become knowledgeable on how to make healthy food choices while grocery shopping and preparing foods inside your home to manage your gluten free diet.

You will be able to identify gluten free grains, meal options and snacks for safe eating anytime. You will also be able cook gluten free for your family and friends with easy to follow recipes excerpted from the book - Simple, Delicious Solutions for Gluten-Free & Dairy Free Cooking by Sueson Vess from Special Eats.

You will become aware of how to eat gluten free outside your home at social gatherings and school. You will also empower yourself to safely eat in restaurants and while traveling with checklists and recommendations excerpted from the books, ebooks & apps - Let’s Eat Out with Celiac / Coeliac and Food Allergies! by Kim Koeller from GlutenFree Passport. You will also discover the pioneering research initiatives, programs and services offered by the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center.

Welcome to the Kicking4Celiac Board

I am very excited to announce that I am now on the board of the non-profit organization, Kicking4Celiac. Founded in 2011 by Craig Pinto, the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that aims to reach out to people affected by Celiac Disease. In doing so, we look to spread positivity, education, and awareness however and wherever we can. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation works tirelessly to raise funds through various charitable events, and is excited to continuously work to help improve the lives of those who are affected by this auto-immune disorder. The Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation also offers a scholarship program to college students affected with the Disease, to help off-set costs and expenses of requiring a gluten-free diet. This scholarship program will begin in 2012 and will be offered to well deserving, graduating high school seniors.

I was first "virtually introduced" to Craig last fall when he was kicking his way into the Guinness Book of World Records for kicking 717 field goals in 12 hours for charity. We emailed for over a month and then finally met in person at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia Gala dinner in October. Craig is quiet and modest but extremely passionate about spreading awareness and raising money for Celiac Disease.

Kicking4Celiac Board Member Sue of GlutenFreeLI, founder Craig Pinto, and Me

As time went by, Craig's foundation began to take roots and grow. He hosted more fundraisers and started doing some really awesome speaking engagements, such as The Believe Symposium on Long Island. The foundation finally became a recognized non-profit organization early this year. I am excited to be a part of this organization especially since I share Craig's passionate for educating people about Celiac Disease and encouraging people to live and thrive with Celiac. As a Guinness Book of World Records record holder, Craig has clearly not let Celiac Disease stop him from doing anything!

On September 29, 2011, Kicking4Celiac its first Golf and Tennis Tournament to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia. You can learn how to get involved by clicking here.

Thank you Craig for all you have done and continue to do for the Celiac Community.

Click here to donate today! Your donation to the Kicking 4 Celiac Foundation will help help us to develop our mission, which is to raise awareness and education for Celiac Disease, as well as provide various students with scholarships. Funds raised will also continuously help us to develop events that will bring the Celiac Disease community together and provide an outlet for support. We thank you for your support and will continue to work as best we can to serve the Celiac Disease community.

An Evening with Paul Taylor Dance Company to Benefit the Celiac Disease Center
I am thrilled to be part of a wonderful fundraiser this March to benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. Although I have attended this event for the past two years, this is the first time I am hands-on in the organization. As an organizer, I have helped secure some fantastic donations, spread the word on blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as meet the wonderful dancers of the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Last Friday, I was at the beautiful dance studios on the Lower East Side of Manhattan taking pictures and enjoying a rehearsal. To be that up close and personal with such amazing talent was wonderful. I do hope you join us on Tuesday, March 2nd for this fundraiser and dance performance.

Celiac Disease Center Gala Fundraiser in Pictures
Last night, I was extremely honored to be invited as a guest of the Celiac Disease Center of Columbia University to their 9th Annual Gala Fundraiser. This is their biggest event of the year and it was a wonderful night. I saw so many familiar faces from the Celiac community as well as meeting a lot of new people. I am always surprised by how many people know who I am, but after running the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup group for 4 years I guess my name gets around.

I recently met Jill Brack of Glow Gluten Free Cookies and we instantly hit it off. She is a dynamic person with so much passion behind her product. Both Jill and her daughter Stella have Celiac Disease, so there is a lot of love behind her cookies. Not to mention, she has some awesome packaging. I took him some Snickerdoodles and probably ate three of them on the subway home! Jill was presented with an award last night at the gala and much to my surprise she mentioned me during her speech. I was so honored!

There were so many other great people there last night that all are amazing contributors to the Celiac Disease community. This includes Sue Moller of Suffolk County Celiacs and GlutenFreeLI, documentary filmmaker Susan Cohen, Craig Pinto of Kicking4Celiac, Alan Olshan of Paul Taylor Dance Company, Dr. Peter Green, the dynamic Cynthia Beckman of the Celiac Disease Center, Jill Brack of Glow Gluten Free Cookies, Tinsley Meloy of Celiebo, and on and on.

Thank you to everyone that attended last night's event and for raising so much money for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.

KICKING 4 CELIAC
UPDATED WITH DATE AND LOCATION

Craig Pinto has become a really active member of the New York and Long Island Celiac community over the past few months. Please read on for his latest endeavor...

"KICKING 4 CELIAC was born out of the desire to show children and adults alike, that living with Celiac Disease will not shut you down physically. On Sunday, October 10th, 2010, at Bethpage High School, arena football kicker, Craig Pinto, will be kicking field goals for 12 straight hours, from 730am-730pm, with two goals in mind. First, he will be attempting to set a world record for most field goals kicked within that time frame, by having to make 500 field goals, from 40 yards out, but Craig's main focus is to raise money and awareness for Celiac Disease.

"With something that has affected me for such a long time, and is so close to my heart, it only makes sense to utilize things I love - kicking and football - to raise money and awareness for my other passion," says Craig. "And that is spreading the word and educating people about Celiac Disease. Kicking footballs for this long seems physically challenging, but so is living with Celiac Disease everyday, and both can be done successfully."

All proceeds will benefit the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, the only center in the United States that provides comprehensive medical care, including nutrition, for adult and pediatric patients with Celiac Disease.

For more information, or any questions on how to donate or sponsor this event, please visit Craig's website http://www.kicking4celiac.com/

Celiac Disease Awareness Night at Citifield
On Tuesday, May 25th the NY Mets hosted their first, and hopefully annual, Celiac Disease Awareness Night at Citifield. The NY Mets gave their spirit award to Kozy Shack and Randi Albertelli of ROCK-Long Island.

Kozy Shack recently announced that their puddings, flan, and gels are all gluten-free. Before the game, they were even giving out free samples of their gluten-free chocolate and rice pudding in the parking lot. I ate two before I even got in the park. I don't eat pudding a lot, but the chocolate pudding was good. It was also great to see right in front of the Kozy Shack sign the poster announcing Celiac Disease Awareness night and the spirit award recipients, including Kozy Shack.

Raising Our Celiac Kids is a free support group for parents, families and friends of kids on the gluten-free diet for any reason including celiac disease, gluten intolerance, autism, ADD/ADHD, allergies, dermatitis herpetiformis, or personal preference. Their meetings are held in Plainview, NY. Randi had coordinated with Citifield so that a portion of the proceeds from our group sales tickets would go towards the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. The NYC Celiac Disease Meetup Group sold 74 tickets for this event! This was our largest meetup event ever!

Although the fundraiser and the first annual Celiac Disease Awareness night was more than exciting, it was the gluten-free concession stand that made everyone quite excited. One of our group members had called ahead to tell the stadium that to prepare for a large demand of gluten-free food, but they were really unprepared. The lines for the gluten-free food were longer than other concession stands in the area. Everyone was so excited at the opportunity to eat "normal" food at the ballpark.

I waited until about the 4th inning to go down and enjoy some gluten-free food when I knew the lines wouldn't be so long. I am a rare gluten-free beer drinker, but I bought two Redbridge beers just because I could! For dinner, I got sausage and peppers on a gluten-free hero roll. I was super excited!! The concession stand also sold hotddogs and hamburgers on gluten-free buns. The bread products all come from The Grainless Baker. My friend Dean and I always go to games and I usually end up eating peanuts and Carvel, but this time he laughed as I gorged myself on gluten-free carbs. I was a happy lady.

I love going to Mets games and think Citifield is amazing. This gluten-free concession stand only reinforces my NY Mets fan status. I am going to another game on June 24th and can't wait to enjoy another great night of gluten-free food in the park.

Enjoy the pictures of the first annual Celiac Disease Awareness night at Citifield with the NY Mets below.
